SL's are beautiful, but some of the parts are very expensive i have been told (i have a mate who works at the main stealers parts dept).

I have owned a 1979 450SL convertible and boy was it a great car. But I have to be honest, my E30 325i convertible just feels better, nippier and with a tech 1 kit looks better too.

Im familiar with the late 80,s 420SL,great car take one all day long over an E30 cab. Not many cars have held their price like the 60,s/80,s SL by the 90,s they lost the plot.

I've been thinking of changing my e30 cabby for a sl, but I think the running costs will be a lot more than the e30.

Theres so much difference in price from as low as 5K up to 25k.

Think the ones in my price bracket may not be the best to buy, but i'll keep looking just in case the right one comes along.

An R129 SL is a lovely thing, bullit proof construction, classic lines, and made as MB's flagship roadster untill 2001..... For the money they are a million times better than an E30....

Agreed, very nice E30 Cab +- 4k / very nice SL Cab +- 12k

Also if you are looking at the 107, general maintenance, servicing and parts are going to be more expensive than the E30 and they also rust!

If your going for a R107 SL , make sure its one that was made after the 1986 facelift ,as these are more desirable due to better rust protection, better interiors, and updated exterior looks...

A 500 if your feeling flush but the straight six 300SL is more than adequete... and still command good money.

I've been looking at early 90's SLs for a while now - incredible amount of car for the money. Saw a fairly tidy 500SL AMG (just wheels and body-kit, not tuned engine) go for aroun £2500 on ebay recently. That's less than I paid for my E30 cab, which wasn't in as good a condition. Just not sure I can live with the stereotype image for drivers of these old cruisers though - haven't seen one on the road with a driver under 70 yet! I'm getting on a bit myself, but I'm not that old!
