Induction
Moderator: martauto
I'm looking at fitting an induction kit to my 1990 318i cab. I'm not after anything too loud. Just a slightly more appealing engine note. I'm tempted by a ramair system but does anyone have any advice ~ £150 max (hence why exhaust system is a little out of reach)

in my humble opinion, i would perhaps invest the £150 in servicing parts if this hasnt already been done, the original BMW induction system is well designed and will give you better flow than the ramair system you describe.

Old Chap, the oem system is perfectly adequate and will not be bettered by any aftermarket system. If it is induction roar that you are after then you may put a panel filter in the air box such as those made by K & N and Pipercross.adam_2922 wrote:I'm looking at fitting an induction kit to my 1990 318i cab. As said previously better to spend the cash on servicing the car or putting it towards your exhaust.
HTH

I dont even own one haha, Iv just learned the hard way that OEM box and panel filter are the way to go. I had to bare the abuse of asking " WOT INDUCTION KIT WILL B BEST FOR MY BEEMER " hahaRich320I wrote:you have a sick obsession with k&n panel filtersverde wrote:OEM airbox, k and n panel filter, spend the 150 quid elsewhere somewhere more useful

If YOU want to fit an induction kit to YOUR car, don't let the people on here convince you not to.adam_2922 wrote:Thanks for the advice guys. Any other advice for a sportier sound track?
Just be aware of the possible pitfalls, the main one being heatsink (induction kit sucking in hot air from the engine bay, engines run best with colder - denser - air being pulled in).
Will you see gains? Not likely, probably even some drops, but if the engine note's all you're after then induction your turd to your hearts content.

Just give me the £150.

I am less experienced than many people on here hence why I am asking for advice rather than just jumping straight in with an induction kit. I am fully aware that I am no expert but keen to learn (rather than be mocked). Im starting with a pretty solid base. My car is stock and had an engine rebuild by bmw 5000 miles ago. It is currently in the bodyshop having a couple of dents worked out, slightly rusted arch replaced (sprayed and blown in aswell) and being mopped. I'm looking for a few early (and relatively straight forward) modifications to get me started and a bit more confident working on the car.

your not being mocked, this is just some light hearted banter...

I dont want to wreck my car by making stupid early mistakes (as it sounds like an induction kit would have been) and spend lots of money to make my car worse! ....im basically admitting this is my first project and I need a bit of guidance rather than thinking i know best and making a pigs ear of it!

The trouble is that BMW engines really aren't sympathetic to modifications. They came from the factory as good as they were ever going to get, because that's what BMW's reputation is built on. Once you start looking at improving the performance of the engine you really need to throw hundreds of pounds at an engine just to eke out a 3-5% upgrade, which is why engine swaps are far more common that bolt-on upgrades.
But if you just want to customise your car for aesthetics, then do what Rancid says. Drill holes in the exhaust, fit a panel filter, weld in a cherrybomb. It's your car, and the most important thing is that you enjoy it rather than following a load of internet keyboard warriors.

You'll be wasting your money trying to modify the 318i engine for more power - just get it running 100% as BMW intended and drive it.adam_2922 wrote:I dont want to wreck my car by making stupid early mistakes (as it sounds like an induction kit would have been) and spend lots of money to make my car worse! ....im basically admitting this is my first project and I need a bit of guidance rather than thinking i know best and making a pigs ear of it!
An induction kit would give you more noise and less power.
a 318i is never going to be considered "fast" regardless of what you do to it - even a 325i is quite tame by modern standards so chucking money at it in an attempt to extract a few more BHP is pointless - just get it running spot on and leave it alone.
You mentioned bodywork in one of your other posts - if you actually want the car to drive better then your best bet is to invest in rebuilding the suspension with OEM spec bushes and quality dampers and springs

All of the above here is true.capri_rob wrote:You'll be wasting your money trying to modify the 318i engine for more power - just get it running 100% as BMW intended and drive it.adam_2922 wrote:I dont want to wreck my car by making stupid early mistakes (as it sounds like an induction kit would have been) and spend lots of money to make my car worse! ....im basically admitting this is my first project and I need a bit of guidance rather than thinking i know best and making a pigs ear of it!

If you were to invest in some suspension thats half decent, maybe polybush the rear subframe and front lower arm rear bushes as well you would have a much much sweeter handling car.
If noise is what you're after then 150quid would secure you a second hand exhaust system off this website with change to spare and will make more noise than an induction kit too without (hopefully) any power loss, as long as you dont go for dustbin size pipework.
PS, you will almost certainly get some banter on here about modifying, lots of people will refer to your car as a turd (we all do lol) but 90% of it is meant in jest so you do what you want to....
....but asking questions first is always a good idea if ya new to e30's.
Welcome by the way.
