Took the e30 (318is) for its MOT today and it passed with flying colours, not even 1 advisory :D
The MOT tester was trying to get me to sell it to him the cheeky git, he commented on how clean and tidy it was which was nice

anyway, i always suspected it was overfueling slightly so i bought a new blue temp sensor from the main dealers in preperation, but the mot result was 0.29 CO%. so obviously its not overfueling.

perhaps i'm being paranoid but does anyone else's e30 smell a bit of fuel or is it just the nature of cars without a cat?

Is the smell in the engine bay? If so there is a short rubber fuel pipe that is perishing. I cant remember exactly if its runs inside or under the inlet manifold, i changed mine when i removed the top part of the inlet manifold, when i did my throttle heater plate delete. You just need a short piece of universal 8mm fuel hose if i remember correctly.

Another possible is the tank breather pipe at it's join to the tank.
Lift the rear seat and remove the access hatch on the driver's side and check the end of the pipe for perishing. It's usually possible to slice the last inch or so off and pull a bit more pipe through to re-make the join.

Mine smells of fuel because I've a leak where the filler pipe joins onto the tank, it's one of them things that I will eventually get around to...

But congrats on your clean sheet MOT, well done indeed :D

cheers all,

its not a smell in the cabin or in the engine bay, the only reason i thought it was rich was because i had the car running at work and the exhaust fumes just smelt rich of fuel.

its been a long time since i had a car with no cat so, so i suspect its just me being paranoid or looking for problems that dont exist
