Every man and their dog had Sierras back in the day. They were cheap, nasty dog toffee. BMWs were owned by a different sort of person - and they weren't as popular as they are today. That's just one of the reasons why you can't compare the two. Tell your mate to stop sniffing glue and coming out with ridiculous comments!

My ex-missus had a 1.8CVH Sierra Estate back in the day

The engine was shit but it had massive comfy seats, an awesome heater, was wicked fun in the snow and could transport 2 adults and 3 fully grown german shepherds with plenty of space to spare - I loved ragging it around.

Was it as good as an E30 ? No. That is all.

The only Ford I've ever owned, despite admiring the classic Escort Mk1s, Capris, etc., was a 1992 Ford Orion 1.6iLX, the first of the Zetec models. It was a very humdrum machine indeed, with wallowy suspension, rubbery gearchange, etc., and you had to rev it quite hard so it never averaged more than about 30 mpg. All in all, pretty uninspiring, and not a patch on the E30s or a Merc 190E that I'd owned previously in terms of reliability, build quality or driver satisfaction. I sold it to my brother, and the gearbox packed up shortly afterwards!

Interesting to hear that, dude. The fusebox is a very common problem with Orions and Escorts of that age.

That said, it made quite a good daily 'hack' because it was the sort of car you didn't really have to care about - just a disposable blancmange on wheels.

Hmmm....
One is an icon of driving perfection still collected by car connoisseurs all over the world which spawned a line of legends that persists to this day. The other is a wobbly shed with a big turbo, renowned for being shit even when it was new and lusted after only by people who drove XR2s and wore white towelling socks "back in the day".

I loved the look of the Cossy when they first came out, and they seemed like a performance bargain for £20,000 back in 1987.

However, having once driven an XR4i, it did put me off Sierras somewhat - it felt very chavvy indeed, compared to the E30 320i I had at the time, and rather embarrassing to be seen in - I was glad to hand it back to its owner!

I'd have a nice 3 door Cosworth tbh. There's something about them but they need to be relatively standard and not 600 bhp knuckledragger spec with all the Samco/chrome/polished underbonnet nonsense.

E30 M3's are nice but they're not very quick anymore. A Sierra with 300+ bhp however, is.

one of my best mates has a 3door moonstone blue, capable of some 550 odd bhp after the thousands spent on the engine at a specialist in essex, its running about 400 at the moment its in them final stages of getting it running perfect after a full restoration,and all the engine work, rs500 front splitter and rear spoiler with them extra little fin bits on that differ to the normal 3door, however hes oem homo style bar the engine, and under the bonnet a lot of hard work sourcing them rare little clips and bits that were specific to the 3 door and rs, like certain little clips and bits for things on them were white, as opposed to black,on other models, and all the other things, its a hell of a car

Snag with such cars is, they are such car thief magnets that their owners hardly dare use them without having to resort to extreme security measures, so it makes them almost unusable.

i own both cars well my 1990 more door and my 1987 xr4x4 2.8

both the 2.8 and 2.9 are around 150bhp with the 2.9 better low down and the 2.8 better on top end due to different gearboxes.

sierra has remote central locking, all around electric windows. tbf everything still works, is on a 190k, full ashley stainless system fitted. makes a lovely noise!

my sierra is in really tidy nick and no rust, seems to turn a lot more heads then my e30 does. suppose the sierra being a lot more common "back in the day"

e30 does feel like a better built car though, both have character in their own way.

A good Sierra is an okay car. Both the German built 2.0iS and the 2.0i Ghia Sapphire with the 205 Pinto were decent cars in the day. Worst were the 1.6 and 1.8 Emax with the horrid small choke Carbs. Just useless.

My ex step dad (don't ask) had an E reg 2.8 XR 4x4, I used tog et headaches in the back after more than 1/2 an hour as exhaust fumes were dragged back into the cabin by the aero so I don't have fond memories.

What I do have fond memories of is laying flat on the roof of a 2.9L 4x4 sierra estate holding onto roof bars speeding down lanes, I've never been so utterly terrified. Very very silly night.
