Yours is the M40, its a capable engine, simple to work on.

The only power gain I can think of, is to make sure its serviced properly!

get it in tip top condition first, good service, rebuild the head if its fooked and noisey, luckly there are plenty of aftermarket camshaft/lifter kits. stick on a new Rotor arm and Dissy cap whilst your at it. Also worth getting your injectors reconditioned. (ive got a set allready done if your interested)

Then look at high lift cam, chip and lightened flywheel, then stick a 4.45 diff on.

Kent cams, Piper cams and diblias all do aftermarket camshafts for them.

You can get chips easy enough for them on ebay and the like. if you have the 380 cat ecu after market chips are hard to get hold of, i bought one once and it ran like a dog and the seller didnt want to know. Ive managed to find another supplied from germany and ive yet to try it out.

Flywheels again can be found around the net if you look

Wont be the fastest thing on the planet and wont return very good bang per buck however but should be fun for what it is.

If your not hell bend on keeping the original engine you could drop an m42 in however again most m42's are worn out with rattly timing gear and spent most there life revving there tits off by young drivers (Speaking from experience :D )

Also your best sorting all the suspension out first, i had a 325i touring with 280k on the clock that was very very tired and was scary in corners. i have a 318i touring auto with 50k on the clock and i can throw that in corners at way quicker speeds than any other e30s ive owned and handles superbly.

M30 would be cheaper as you dont have to move the servo, make complex exhuast manifolds etc and wiring is a piece of piss. i recon you could do m30 for well under £500 M52 would be £700 do do it properly with dan-the bits
