I'm going to be changing the gearbox mounts as they look quite old and worn I've just changed the engine mounts no probs so can anyone tell me what the gearbox ones are like to do? Does the bar need to be removed or can the bushes be lifted out while the bar remains?.
Can anyone recommend any particular brand, the car is an I.s

There's a nut on each side of the mount, and if they haven't been changed in twenty-odd years then those nuts won't be coming off any time soon; more likely you'll tear the mounts themselves while trying to undo the nuts.
As long as the gearbox is supported by something like a scissor jack, it's no drama taking the crossmember off to do the mounts; it's only held on with two bolts anyway.

There's very little weight taken on the rear crossmember, so no problem in removing it. You can easily support the gearbox by hand while putting a stand under it.
Take care with the crossmember nuts - if you apply too much torque to the bolts, the 'square' bit will open up the fixing slots in the body.
