As far as I'm aware drums require less assistance, so maybe the seals are only used to working to a certain pressure and perhaps shape themselves accordingly, adding a new pressure and a different stress weakens them?

All fine and well but unless you go for agreed value they won't pay out for the value of the mods anyway. I can accept they will assume you will drive the car in a more spirited manner, and rightly so.

Maybe master cylinders were not the ideal example but my point being that lots of Freds in sheds are nailing bits on their cars without any background knowledge of how things work .

This is for a facelift late model; poverty spec refering to the steelies, black bumpers, analogue clock, keep fit sunroof, radio blank, etc. One less thing to worry about!

The early servos were also different, pre-pre-facelift that is, the pre 87 cars IIRC had a different MC/split system arrangement also but ive seen it on both drum and disc, even sports had it.
But yeah I completely agree with what you are saying, ive put plenty of lash ups right myself, even ones done by so called 'specialists' that have cost several thousand pounds more than a proper job would round here :(

^ so just to confirm, 51mm struts and rear discs off a 86 325i, will be okay in a 90 1.6? all pipes etc are similar, or do i need to mod,

yep new subframe and arm bushes, along with a lick of paint, an LSD and H&R arbs,

i should be okay the donor cars had the subframe off in the past according to service history, fitted polybushes, and that in around 2010 so hopefully i can re-use the cables,
