How much chew was it actually to do the Vanos seals, got all the bits here ready to do mine

It's easy really I did it the way monkey on here told me to try an not remove the vanos from the cam. I removed the bolts that hold the piston into the cylinder so I left the helical gear in the end of the cam as you can see in the picture! so I didn't have to lock or re time anything! really easy an it seems some units has one big o ring an some has a o ring an a Teflon seal over the top!

How difficult was it to get the bolts out of the piston cover plate? Id imagine it to be a bit of a git, but then like you say no need to mess with the timing
All single vanos have an inner O ring and an outer teflon seal BTW

so you can get a spanner to those bottom bolts on the cover plate with it all still in situ?

Yea I took the bottom ones out easy I used my fingers an a magnet just to help! just crack them off with a spanner Really easy job to be fair!

was it much faffing getting the cover back over the piston with the new seals after?

no easy just put some oil on it an it went on fine!

ive just done this method yesterday, once you get the housing loose, you can juuusstt about get at all the 10mm bolts and get them out in order to get the housing fully off

Easy job!
To get more clearance give the inlet cam a slight turn with a 27mm spanner, this will push the vanos piston out of the sprocket, dont go mad or you will have to reset the timing if it drops out
