That's just the casting number which could relate to anything from an E30 318i to an E28 520i.

You need the serial number - it's stamped into the bellhousing around the edge. Clean the edge of the box right up and you'll see it - numbers followed by three or four all important letters. Get that, and I can tell you what it is. :D

No it ain't.

The 240 box was used in many different cars - M10 and M40/42 bellhousing bolt patterns are different and the 318iS box is slightly longer.

I did, and there are two glaring errors.

The table lists the letters, but doesn't say which cars or engines they fit.

And the M10/M40-42 boxes will not iterchange at all. Nothing to do with the angle the unit sits at - the bolt spacing is different so an M10 box will not physically bolt to an M40 or M42 engine.

Ahhh, ok. I'll make those amendments ASAP then. Cheers :D

I'll add info regarding which 'box codes fit each car when I find them; I don't think the Restoration Bible has them either.

Oh it does. :wink:

LF = four speed 242, 316 M10

MN and BMV = 5 speed 240, M10 carb

MD and BMU = as above, 318i M10

BMO, TBCU and BCX = 5 speed 240 , M40 and some 318iS

BCO, BCP, BCT = 318iS and E34 518i (pre 1992 overdrive). These boxes are the longer units with the shorter prop.

Oh I know, I know :) Sometimes it's tempting to copy page after page of the Bible into the Wiki, the info in there is so good. But so far I've resisted that temptation.

So far...

You would be well advised to take facts from the 'Bible',expanded with practical detail from forum members.Bear in mind that there may well be a copyright issue, but Andy will be approachable about that sort of thing!

So far I'm taking the approach that the Wiki is a Zone product, so it must be based primarily on data posted or created on the Zone. If there's an article on another site, I always ask permission first.

It's not right to just lift data from other sources, especially ones people have spent their own time and energy on with the aim of financial gain, so I'll only post Bible stuff that Andy himself has volunteered on the site.
