diesel swaps
Moderator: martauto
Has anybody done a diesel swap from an e46 320d?i drove my dads and it seemed to pull quite nicely, and it got me wondering what it would be like with the lower weight of an e30.ideally i want to keep my e30 as my daily driver, as i cant afford another car and dont want to get rid of the e30, so was looking at doing a diesel swap from one of the newer bmws.Anybody attempted this?ive seen a few with the older diesels being put into tourings but none with this engine

if you want to do a swap to a derv donkey then at least go for something worthwhile like the lump out of the E90 335i.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

An LPG conversion can't cost you more than £1500 even if you have it fitted by someone else and leave £100 tip. DIY can be a lot cheaper, especially if you buy second hard parts from a scrapper.
Compare the costs with swapping to a diesel and you'll see why "DIESEL IS CHEAPER" isn't quite as true as the marketing suits would have you believe.

no major money being spend in this on going 330d e30 project http://www.e30owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16856
main reason for the 2.0d is im only 20 so would have to wait a good few years if i wanted to get insured on a 3.0d swap.
with lpg swaps is it car specific for the kits which you buy?
my dad has a honda accord with an lpg conversion which is due to be scrapped soon, is it possible to use the kit out of this in an e30?

Need far more details of the kit to give a definitive answer.
ive never seen the honda accord as i dont live with my dad, so thats as much as i know.hes been asking for me to get it to a scrap yard as its a non runner.so i may aswell salvage whatever i can from the honda.will try and go see the car at the weekend and get some info on it.
as for the e46 320d has nobody done this swap?i cant find any info on it online.

It will cost you £1500 for decent running gear and then many hours and much language and money to turn it into a working reliable car. People do these conversions because they enjoy fooking about with scrap ,not because it makes financial sense.
IF cheapness per mile is what matters, LPGing what you have is a much better option.

id happily spend the money on the build, but with the way insurance is going diesel's feel/are much quicker. thats why i was thinking of a diesel.
ideally i would buy an s50, but i wouldnt be getting insured on it until im 25+.
im going to look into this honda which my dad has and see if the lpg kit can be salvaged for my car.

How does insurance work out cheaper on an e30 with an engine swop?
If you want a diesel then go for it but I don't think you'll be able to justify it on cost grounds.

Insurance can be an issue, but if you take your time and search around it can really pay off. My insurers werent happy when their competitor beat their price, and offered it to me even cheaper, I have been insured on my E30 V8 since 23 and before that it was a M50 conversion which again was no issue.gibson9 wrote: ideally i would buy an s50, but i wouldnt be getting insured on it until im 25+.
Iv owned loads of high insurance cars, I had a C43 Amg at 18, insurance was pricy but not horrific at £1300 for my age, some of my friends were paying that on a saxo!
If your going to do it, do it properly with this
