selling a private plate questions
Moderator: martauto
i have acquired another turd with plenty tax & test but it has a private plate [not a name plate]
what do i need to do to go about selling it ?
i sold a plate once to a company advertising in add trader but that was a name plate [E49 JAN]
this plate i have has x3 letters --Z 6859
is it worth the hassle of selling it ??

I think, first you will need to go to the DVLA to take that plate off the car and put it on retention. They will then need to assign a new number plate to the car.
You will then be able to sell the private plate to the highest bidder.
with regard to is it worth the hassle, i'm not sure, but i would guess that the plate you have is an "Ageless" plate so can be assigned to any car or any age.

well the ageless part is a slight bonus,i got £650 for E49 JAN and found out it went on a Jag XK8 so the company probs made more money than me with the sale of it

Unless I am completely wrong that is not a private plate, merely a Northern Irish one.magpie wrote:this plate i have has x3 letters --Z 6859

It may have some value to a water breather but I would not waste any time or effort on it.

/\/\/\/\ As above Mick this is a N Irish plate and not worth putting any time into trying to flog it - not unless you know some council type with a 7 series or Impreza who wants to "impress" the neighbours

Just cost me £117.16 to put one on retention (including new plates for the doner), and it costs £25 a year to keep it on retention.

If it's a Irish plate not worth it as they are dirt cheap anywho, anyone fancy buying mine
Was looking this up today, could do with selling mine to free up some cash, but not got enough free cash to put it on retention!!
Looked up a few of these 'sell your plate' companies and they reckon they can sell C20 AMW for £600!!!!
People pay that money?
Are there companies out there that will buy a number plate and do all the retention lark?

i don't know that anywhere actually buys the plate, they just act like agencies advertising it on your behalf for a cut of the sale. they also tend to massively overvalue plates too!
a lot of them also advertise plates still available on the dvla website
as for irish plates, not worth more than £100, so by the time it's on retention it's not going to be worth it.
does a plate need to be on retention to sell it? or could you just transfer it straight to the buyers car without going on retention first ( im sure the transfer fee is £80, or was anyway) so in theory you could sell the plate for £100, but make it clear the buyer pays the transfer fee, so it's cost them £180 all in, but you get to keep the £100 for the plate itself.

They dont often buy plates but they do list them and take a commission or add a their own percentage . The old man paid 6k for his number plate that's on te e24, we knocked back and offer of 30k a few years back
Saying that, one company offered to buy it from us for 8k I then found it listed with out my permission at 25k lol
I happily parted with money for my 'KOS' plates

Mike, those sort of plates used to be selling for £29, so definitely not worth all the hassle imo.
i've done it a few times for my ADY plates, but it's a bit of an effort tbh

--Z 6859 sadly is worthless, there are so many of them. Its just a regular NI plate, and theres so little demand for vanity plates at the moment. Not worth any more that the cost of the retention certificate.
Selection of BMW hardtops available, please ask!
when i put mine on retention due to a car swap it was £100 odd quid and i think it covered you for 2 years. after that you could hold it for another year or two for an extra fee (per year) but im sure it said that the plate could not be held on retention for more than 3-4 years and had to be either registered to another car or you would lose the entitlement.
why not put it up for sale private on say pistonheads and put it on retention when you have a definate buyer? thats what i did with a different plate i had, as soon as the buyer had put a deposit down i ran up to the dvla and sorted it out that day. few days later i had my new reg through the post and handed over the old one.

The way I've written it is wrong, sorry guys I'll dig out mine after and write word for word. Just re-read it
It's £105 to remove it from the car and put it on the retention certificate for 12 months, it's then £25 each year thereafter (but you can now retain it for up to 3 years instead of the mandatory 12 months for £75, same price but saves the hassle every year).
That £105 includes the transfer fee to assign the number to the new vehicle.
It's £80 from car to car.
That Irish plate is worth pence, not worth the £80 out of your pocket.
