E92 Topmounts On E30 318is
Moderator: martauto
I think these were what i was on about the other day when i posted up a new thread.
So the E92 spring top hats will fit E30 springs, spring rubber and top mount?
Part #8 in this pic (BMW part #31336764093);

Im using these, they fit the e30 springs, rubber pad and top mounts fine. The only difference is literally the depth of the top hat.Kedge wrote: So the E92 spring top hats will fit E30 springs, spring rubber and top mount?

Wicked. I'll be on to Cotswolds now then.
They fitted in your sig? I'll be running 16" Hartges as well, on 35mm Eibach Springs. Using 3mm spring pads all round as well. Hopefully be ok on a chromie.

That looks spot on. Waiting on a price now
I'll stick with the 3mm rears for now since the chromie has a higher arch profile on the rear, see what it's like once it's back on the deck and settled down.

Thats a very good point, i went for the thicker rear pads to give it a bit more rake but it would probably look stupid on a prefacelift with its arch lineKedge wrote: I'll stick with the 3mm rears for now since the chromie has a higher arch profile on the rear, see what it's like once it's back on the deck and settled down.

Hey guys...thanks for all the input here.
Anyone got a part number for the bit needed? Will they sit on any set of springs fitted to an E30 that were a straight swap from originals? Mine lowered 40mm on springs, they were just a direct swap, no retro fitting from what I can gather.
If I add these, it should drop it to 50mm-ish right?

Still waiting on a response from Cotswolds.
The part number is in my earlier post with the picture, from the info I have you're right in the amount they'll lower your car. Should be suitable for any spring that fits an e30.

You can still drop the rear a few mm though using the thinner spring pads.
Will ring Cotswold later if i don't get a response this morning, usually pretty good though.
Got my new front spring pads through yesterday as well

Ah right. As you've probably noticed I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to all this, ha!
So I can go for these E92 top hats on the front, use thinner spring pads on the back and I should be riding a little lower.
This should be a nice simple fix until I can afford some GAZ coilies.

Depends how low I want to go :p
I'm probably going to upgrade the whole set up in the future, either by way of some decent coilovers, like GAZ ones, or by way of the Blistein b4/b6 and some decent springs, with the mods mentioned above.
We shall seeeeee!

I don't think you need coilovers either. You're paying a lot of money for features few people ever use.
With the tophats and 3mm spring pads on the front you're dropping it at least another 15mm. Plus another 6 on the back with the 3mm spring pads there.
Just got a price from Cotswolds, £16.74 for the pair of top hats. Think the springs pads were about £3.00 each.

Got my new top hats today and painted them up, took a pair of struts apart today as well to give an idea of the difference between the E90 and E30 tophats.

Hard to tell the actual height difference but it is clear to see the top mount will sit quite a bit lower.
Here's the difference in springs pads to.

I reckon you're looking at something around a 15mm drop on the front using these for little more than £20
Still no idea how to tell before taking the struts off what upper spring pad you have. The ones i took apart today were off a chromie 325i and i have some at home off a facelift 325iSE which looked more like 3mm pads

The top mount will remain in the same place but the top of the spring will sit higher up in the wheel arch hence the car being lower.Kedge wrote:Hard to tell the actual height difference but it is clear to see the top mount will sit quite a bit lower.

e30topless said : Proper BMW's have 4 headlights, last of the run was the E30 and E34/E32 anything after that is just complete shite
Yea that's more like it, my explanation was a bit on the shit sidebss325i wrote:The top mount will remain in the same place but the top of the spring will sit higher up in the wheel arch hence the car being lower.Kedge wrote:Hard to tell the actual height difference but it is clear to see the top mount will sit quite a bit lower.
Watching this with great interest.
Do I understand that you'll end up with about -15mm at the front but only -3mm at the rear?
Won't it look a bit 1980's Streetmachine ?

These are sensations as hard to forget as they are to ignore.....
H&R Cupkit is 60/40, and i like the nose down stance.
I'm not ruling out wanting to lower the rear more but the only option there is different springs. Will see what it's like once the car is on the road which is some way off.

This is a great little thread. Getting together everything for a full suspension upgrade for my IS. Just researching into what to get. I just put a fresh set Eibach Sport Pro springs as a start and to get it through the MOT. It was lowered before and the new springs have dropped it almost the same, however the rear could be dropped a touch more to satisfy my taste. Those 3mm spring pads would be ideal.
Only one concern, looking at that picture the are considerably thinner than the 10mm (obviously), will these wear/perish quicker??
