Bike(s) in the back of a touring
Moderator: martauto
Want to use my bike a bit more over summer, so thought about getting a touring so I can throw mine (and sometimes the other halfs) bike in the rear. I've got a bike rack but don't trust them!
Is it easy to fit 2 bikes in the back of the touring?

no, very tricky!
remove rear headrests (if app.), drop down the rear seats, remove bike front wheels and you may have a chance with a lot of jiggery-pokery
this was discussed a little while ago:

much better off with an E36 touring you can get at least one bike in the back no problem sure you could get 2 in.
For how cheap they are these days you may as well get a bike rack though much easier to use

I bought a new bike for my Daughter (Adult size hybrid) and it fitted in with just the rear seats folded. I would think that two would be very tricky.....
Kind regards

Years since i've used an E30 touring for putting the bikes in and never even attempted two. Far easier in my Seat Leon. Think that says it all really!
Humm, back to the drawing board again. I would like to have an other E30 and getting a touring made sense for the bikes.
I know I can get a bike in the back on a 2 door but defiantly won't get 2 in the back!
I have a bike rack, just don't want to use it. Never that confident with them. No matter how tight you do them, it seems lose-r when I arrive!
E36 is a no go really. I'd be happy with a basic e30 316 estate, but if I went e36, it'd have to be a 328! Maybe I'll look at a old 5er.

How big are peoples bikes?
an adult mountain bike will fit in the back of a metro if you take the front wheel off. for two you take a blanket and put the second bike on top of the first. surely a touring isnt that small?

I've crammed 3 mountain bikes and 3 people in my touring. Fold one of the rear seats flat, take both wheels off and they will go in. It is a squeeze but it is possible.
The bikes were just hard-tails, I doubt you'd have much luck with a downhill steed with 8" travel forks on it.

its absolute piece of piss, just take the front wheels off and drop them in, i have to do it about once a week (some times a gap and then 3 days in a row).
regularly used to putting two full dh bikes in and full kit for a weekend for 2 people.

I'd rather not take the front wheels off, yes I know it doesn't take long!
The idea is to chuck 'um in, drive for 15 minutes and spend half a day riding around interesting trails, not sitting on a tarmac road for 50 minutes to get there!
I'm happy to have the rear sears folded down all the time, it'll rarely have more than 2 people in the car.

Red touring in my sig. has transported five bikes for thousands of miles all over western Europe - all carried on a towbar mounted bike rack.
There's a plate sandwiched between the towbar and the ball hitch with a tubular socket on either side, and a couple of 'L' shaped bars slot into these upside down.
Alternatively, a couple of roof bars would do the job.
