temperture gauge

ive just changed the cluster on 1983 316 1.8,the temp gauge goes up to half way then drops down to cold then 10 mins later goes back up to half way and back down again is this an electrical problem or the thermostat?

Most temperature gauge faults seem to end up being the nut on the back of the gauge needs tightening. Simple fix so try that first
