Dont waste your loot.
It will sound nice but you wont gain any more power, you will probably loose power without a good sheild around it.

Only asked as I had a K&N Typhoon in my Accord Type-R which added more BHP but then again it was dyno proved by K&N and the forum members, the noise was awesome too!!leeparkes wrote:Dont waste your loot.

I brought a 325i with one fitted and they do sound good, probem was there's a lot of heat under an E30 bonnet and when sitting there (at the lights) the engine is sucking in hot air which in turn wasnt good. Replaced with an oem box and paper filter and tbh there isnt much difference between the two once moving it was just at low speeds it didnt feel so responsive.
Noticed the difference in traffic though.

I actually found the k&n to be crap on my old e30
Seemed restricted with the airflow
There also not very big which i thought was part the problem
Had the same problem on my vec gsi and would never use k&n again tbh
I ran a piper-x foam one on my e30 , Much better and revved freely as well
There good on a cold evening like now but crap with heat soak going round town

You need to have a K & N sticker on one of the windows to get the full 15 BHP.Dezzy wrote:K&N, With a plant pot around it and a bit of tube tie wrapped against it from the bumper FTW.
15 BHP nailed on!

i went down the road of a cone filter.. but now i run stock on my 2.7 m20. you WILL lose hp on a cone filter period! the m20 filter box is the only way to go imo.. i tried a few types of filter but went bk to stock.. the only other thing i would try is a k&n panel filter to fit the standard box m8, not tried yet but the box/trumpet design is def the beat way to go.. imo ofc. try it if you must but i would bet you will end up going bk to standard soon enough ^^
i've tried kits on all my previous bmws e34- 530 v8, 518,525,520 24v, e30 - 325 and 316, generally i found that they improve high revs noticably enough(especially the enclosed cone i had on my 24v) but lag a bit in lower revs although sounded supreme. when i removed it the lower end was much better but lost a bit power at 4k plus. but major decrease in mpg when fitted!!
i guess it depends on what you want but tbh i think all bmws run better standard, bmw dont spend all tht money on r&d to make the car run as good as it does to have a cheap bit filter fitted!
check the cost of a brand new bmw air box and filter against price on a good induction kit bet bmw trumphs it.

i did this on my cav with an 8mm drill bit. 10-15 holes, as long as its on the side before the air gets filtered i never had any problems with itjimbob29 wrote:most people i know drill a few 2pence sized holes on the bottom left side of box with an oem filter fitted?is this ok to do?

Not on a standard car you won't.. And what you gain in bhp on one end you lose when the bloody thing gets hot at the other.. The OEM airbox had a lot of money spent on making sure it didn't suck up the hot air from the bay etc.. A decent cotton panel filter will always give you the best and most drivable gains.. Couple that with a free flowing exhaust and you're in business..
Why do you think these companies suggest a cold air feed?!?! So, you buy a filter with the same surface area as the OEM airbox and then you direct shit looking bit of flexible pipe to it (like the OEM has) for cold air?! What's the point! Save the £40 difference!!

Not totally ridiculous around here! I've hosed several kilos of mud from the arches and general underside of my cars on many occasions. Enough to be the equivalent of a hp or two.capri_rob wrote: Plus an easy 5-10bhp from a good wash & polish
