Hey guys, looking for a bit of info.
Going to look at a 325i Tourer Auto, and just wanting some info about the auto box.
The car has done 130k and has been well maintained.
How reliable are the boxes? Any tell tail signs I should look for?
If the box does go wrong, how common are they and what kinda money in buying one?
TIA
Cheers
Chris

Autobox rarely go wrong to know my knowledge, from memory I havent seen any threads appear with people saying they're having issues.
I have a 325 touring in auto and thats spot on when the rest of the car isnt playing up!
Gear change should feel smooth, try the kickdown when test driving it, it drops the gear and pulls away quickly.
Make sure you get to some good speeds too so that it can engage all gears and just see how it feels.
Buying an autobox shouldnt be a problem though as no one ever wants them! I wouldnt be paying more than £50 for one either.
Also, my B20 auto was feeling a bit odd on gear change but it turned out to be gearbox oil had got low, so just check that out to when inspecting.

As already said! Normally 100% reliable, if previously owned by 'auto' persons.
You can break anything if you try hard enough, or neglect it enough, and there's always exceptions to any rule, but generally, they should work as they left the factory, and keep on doing so.

True, but I've never seen one on an E30 yet, auto or manual.ucpsale wrote:ATF dripping from bottom of bell housing, gearbox shaft oil seal has failed.

Saying that, I noticed my ATF was a little low the other week and remember the MOT guy said there was some sort of leak so I need to inspect that at some point... Possibly a leak from there but not confirmed yet.
Let us know how you get on with the motor though!
