Remove the fuel pick up from your existing tank, and check whether there is a dish, around 80mm diameter welded to the bottom of the tank directly under it.
It's been claimed on here that carb. tanks didn't have this dish (the only difference), but the tank I removed from a (very late) carbed E30 definitely did.
Also check the plug and socket under the fuel vent steel tube at the RH end of the seat pan, under the rear seat cushion, to see if there is a green/purple wire coming to it in the main body loom, that doesn't continue on the other side of the plug and socket.

I've got a 325i tank from my touring available, may also be able to supply the fuel return you'll need if it's still in good condition.

I've still got my 316 tank and there is definately no dish in it unlike the injecetion tanks.

I'm currently in the middle of swapping tanks on my 316 for my M20 swap so can show you want you need to do as it's all out of the car at the moment.
