Hi all :D

I'm new to here (newish to BMW's really!) always been my dream to own an E30, its the absolute iconic car for me. After years of owning all sorts of cars from classic, fast, american muscle to a smart car Ive been there for whatever circumstance meant I had it at the time. The one and only BMW we have owned is our current main car which is a 5 series.

Now its time for me to be a little selfish and get what I've always wanted an e30
winkeye

I am really wanting to pick your brains and absorb your advice on them.

What model should I aspire to get, and what model realistically should I aim for.
Common problem areas or issues.
Cars/models to avoid
Whats best convertible or coupe (i'm actually more drawn to a coupe now after seeing some cars on here)
Or any other advice or help you can offer.

I'm looking to spend around 1-2 grand possibly more depending on how much of my life I can ebay to fund one and how much I get for my VR6.

Hope to hear from you soon
Jayne xx

I am not sure, to be honest. I am used to driving V6, V8's & volvo T5's. Insurance wise it doesnt matter because I'm old!! lol
I'm not too fusy about economy as I dont do lots of miles anyway.

I'd like something that sounds nice and can move when needed, but its not the main pinnacle.

What do you suggest? Are there reliability issues with any of the engines? Or is it more just personal choice. I suppose if I could afford it I would go for the larger engine unless it was advisable not to.

I don't think you can ask us which model you should aspire to? Surely that's up to you, you either have a certain one you like or not. If you just love E30's then I would simply get the best one you can afford whatever model it is, unless you have a specific like or dislike of cabs etc. they're all good in my opinion, get the one with the least amount of rust! All else is pretty easily fixable!

Dear Rollergirl

Rules of the majority of the Zone are;

Four doors (known as moredoors here) are less desirable
2 door coupes rock
Has to be 6 pot
Watch and search for rust (scuttle area, wheel arches)
Of the 4 pots, the best is the M3 (lol) then your 318is I guess

From the 6 Potters, 325i or nothing :P

Edit: I swapped my 325i 2 door coupe for a 325i Touring and have no regrets now I have a little one.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

One can't define which is 'best' unless you are willing to apply some criteria.

Best handling? Coupe. The cabrio is just a bit too wobbly.
Best looking? Cabrio.
Best ownership proposition? Probably the cab, if maintained properly, it will hold its value better imo.

Engine type depends on how much you're willing to spend on fuel. 4 pots have slightly sweeter handling (318iS being the pick of the bunch), if you want torque and six cyl smoothness, the 325i is the obvious choice.

2K can get you a very good coupe and a fairly good cabrio.

I'd vote for the cabriolet, but I am biased. :)

Hi you should really go and test drive a 325i,318is or 320i and see what you think, then make up your mind what model to go for i.e touring,saloon/cabby.
I'm sure there are some zoner's near you who you could meet so may be you could check out there rides.I hope that helps you.Good luck Tony winkeye :D

Well even if I'm alone in this I prefer four door saloons tbh! :D
And that's not to say 2dr's and cabs are shite, they are all e30's at the end of the day and it doesn't make me any less a zoner cos I have 2 more doors...... I've had a 2dr before, this is my 3rd e30 and this 1 I went out to find a "moordoor" to transplant the oily bits and make a ""fast, family four door saloon"". Worst shape imo is the touring, but again I'm not saying they are shite lol

As said mind, its all about your personal preferance. You shouldn't be put off by what other people think or will think of you for having a certain model.

Good luck with your choice

Hmmm, ok, engine wise...

- of the two 6 pots the general consensus is you might as well have the 325i as it's an extra 40hp at more or less the same fuel economy. (Having said that, I like a 320i auto cabby myself.)

- of the 8v four pots, the same applies to 318i/316i. You might as well have the bigger one because the other's underpowered and not that much more efficient anyway.

There's also the 318iS which has a 16v 4 pot in it and is considered (by those who don't have a 325i) to be pretty good actually.

Body shapes...

- the coupe is sporting and sexy.
- the moredoor is practical but not so pretty.
- the cabby is pretty but lacks stiffness in the chassis.
- the touring is handsome but not for everybody.

Other things you need to know about include:

-Pre and post facelift

Pre-facelift = chrome bumpers, very classic look
Post-facelift = smoother profile, plastic everywhere, slightly different at the back

You can have either one bodykitted in which case it's either a Tech I (pre) or Tech II (post) kit.

It's all about the condition of the car - low mileage etc is nice but much less important than a well looked after car.

lots of sound advice as always, thing id do if i were you- is look at pics pics pics on here, and find ANY nearest e30s for sale via here, ebay, picton heads, auto trader...just find any nearest no matter the condition and price, or an e30 zone meet (check the meets section on here) and just go see them and have a look all round, sit in them, have a drive in them , depending where you live ie if you have a few within a quick drive, then you might test some different cars and then decide if you want a cabby or a coupe and what sort and engine (if you can test a few) , do you have a garage ? ideally if your just going to do pleasure driving then a cabby will be nice, but then it would be best if it was garaged to keep it out of the bad weather and winter and keep the roof nice etc, where as a coupe would be better and maybe a tad wiser to have if no garage and not mega miles done in it

a 318is is a good car (what i own) , a better coupe and all round car than say a 316,318, or a 320, its sporty and a more sought after model, nice interior and cars than can be nicley specced up over time and enhanced, good on fuel ,better than a 320 on fuel and a lighter car, and it has a nice revvy nippy engine, that if a nice engine and well maintained it will love to drive , got lots of power at the higher revs too and picks up and pulls niceley for a 1.8 engine, nice cars

or if fuel, insurance, running costs, arnt really an issue- then it has to be a 325i , although you wont get a sport for 2k, (looking at double that) and a 2 door coupe 325i in nice condition, dont really pop up for sale that much youl have to have a good hunt around, and a "nice" one will be more than 2k anyway maybe, you want a good conditon car whatever it is unless you want to throw money at it , theres a nice looking silver 320i se, for sale on here for 1k that from the pics looks like a very nice buy for a grand, also a nice looking white 318is for 1500 from baked bean

if it were me id be looking at the models- 318is, or a 325i coupe or se, or a 318i or 320i cabby ,a 325i cabby might be out of your budget for a nice one,as might other models, or if 4 doors arnt a problem maybe a nice 325i se, seen some nice ones witha 2k budget come up and as 4 doors often less abused than 2 door models and get a nice car for the money

do what i did aswell...post up cars your thinking of/like the look of on here, and people will tell you their views and steer you away from any bad cars

good luck, and youl love owning an e30 !!

Im going to vote for the cabby, but thats because I have one my self. Engine wise I would say 325 is the way to go. Go through some of the pictures on here and see what kind of E30 takes your fancy the most.

Cabby too much hassle for everyday car, I had coupe and cab and i live where we have no rain and less car theft, cab was a weekend toy but noisy for everyday, unless you buy hardtop, but then security in UK an issue, not avoided by hardtop as people nick those.

This only leaves the two door tin top, as no self respecting person should ever drive a car with four doors!!!

Touring all day long!
They're prettier, stiffer, better balanced and more practical. The only downside is the tailgate itself which is prone to rust - but can be swapped out.
325i Touring :)

Oh and they have exlusive cachet of using M3 parts which makes them a cut above the other "mundane" e30s. Yep, that roof mounted ariel is a winner :)

Have a read of the thread topics in Technical help - full of cabby owners whose roofs aren't working properly at the moment! Most E30s have niggles, but cabs have all those niggles and are then prone to faulty roofs. A convertible that doesn't convert has to be a pretty daft proposition :?

Yeah but those are just poor examples. As long as you have one thats been well looked after you are fine. Mine sat in a yard for two years, fit a new hood to it, and not had a single problem with the hood.

Sounds like a silly question, but do you like convertibles?! Some people don't get the appeal, others love topless motoring
If you fall into the latter category, nowt else will do!

I forgot to add that to my last post! Some people dont liek the idea of having to manually put the hood down, but I can do it in about 10 seconds on my cab, so its not a big deal. Would rather that than have the reliability issue that pretty much all electric hoods suffer from regardless of make, model and age.

Yeah, don't touch a cabby with a less than perfectly functioning roof is probably good advice if you value a stress free existence. Especially if it's electric..
