Has anybody removed theirs and bought new from BMW? I'm thinking about this and was wondering if it's nla? If not how much? Also, the best way to remove all the old crap? I know I could ask BMW if it's available but they aren't open at 9 oclock on a sunday and I'm impatient.

Cheers

Use a nice sharp scraper and should come off nice and easy.

Did it before with a few other cars of mine but where it has been one entire section and was a pita due to the size...hopefully this will be slightly easier due to the three smaller sectional aspect....in theory!!!

I got a brand new one for mine, and it was chewed to f**k by mice in about 3 days. About £50 iirc but there's cheaper out there. I just scraped the worst of the old stuff away with a broken bit of number plate.

Dont use anything sharp unless you want to scratch the paint off, the best tool for this is a plastic filler spreader.
Anything with a blade or made from metal is just going to cause damage

From my sports thread.

bss325i wrote:Another job i have tackled recently is the under bonnet foam which is a common E30 problem and can be very unsightly under the bonnet when its old and crumbly!

A top tip for this job!

I have heard of other people tackeling this and it being very messy and time consuming. Well i have found something that speeds things up and reduces the mess!

Toytas own brand brake cleaner! It is solvent based and after removing the bonet, pulling of the bigger chunks of foam you are left with the glue still on the bonnet with a thin layer of foam.
The Toyota brake cleaner disolves the glue and foam and turns it into a mush that can be scraped of, near enough wiped off with plastic filler spreader and a rag.

Once the mush is removed a wipe down with the brake cleaner and the surface is ready to stick the new foams on. The brake cleaner does not damage the paint in any way either.

I missed that on your sport thread Baz.

I like it though. Does it have to be the rice brake cleaner only?

Guys; What is used to apply the new stuff, or is it supplied with a sticky back so that it's just pressed in place?

Being inspired by Barry's lovely pictures, I thought I would get down and get mine ordered from Sytner Leicester... Costing 38 and so many pennies... Will be there on wednesday

Also got a new rubber boot and breather hose as both of mine are in a bad way, so should be running that little bit better when fitted.

[slight hijack] Anyone able to comment on how much noise is surpressed by this sound deadening foam?

Reason being my M30'd cab sounds like the typical skeleton in a filing cabinet, and I am wondering if re-fitting new underbonnet sound insulation would help. I removed the original insulation years ago.

Two of mine are mint , i mean really mint... while the third one someone has pulled a chunk away at the corner....

@Low_E30 - I think it comes only in a 3 part set to be honest, but you'd have to enquire... Also, the ones you say that are mint might turn out to be discoloured compaired to the new one
