I have been told by many trimmers that leatherette has all the quality of leather but not of the negatives associated with it.. It is beeter wearing and far easier to look after, much more resistant to the sun and will last longer.
They have told me leather is great if you a prepared to maintain it, leatherette feels looks and smells like leather but cost a lot less.
I will be going leatherette when I get mine done.

Leather is nice to have, but in a cabby I think it is a waste of time, especially in a hot climate, in the summer I can almost "feel" the leather drying out... I still have the original leather in mine which I maintain anally & has a lovely patina but the top of the back seat has done what it is known to do & I will have the a top half re-trim in leatherette. If and when any splits appear in the seats, then I will definitely go leatherette for the whole interior.
My father's 1987 Merc W124 has the optional leatherette & the interior still looks brand new!

I remember when you had leatherette in a car as a cheap replacement for leather ..it will crack in time but leather is a luxury covering and needs maintaining ..and if you have a cab it might look good but you will perspire... fabric is so much more comfortable in the summer

i car i striped recently has black leatherette fitted and it looked really good (except perhaps for the red piping), i still have the headrests and it looks quite good material.
