I wouldn't advise buying cheap as shortly after installing it you'll encounter problems such as bad signal, failure and bad build quality.
I had a cheap alarm with remote start on my old capri and the range was dreadful and it was very temperamental. Caused a bit of a headache.

I have several cheap locking units fitted to several of my cars, all off of ebay from 'rightclick2003'.
The last one I bought was £25.
All have performed faultlessly since I fitted the first one around six years ago, the remote fobs are all lasting well, with the only minor criticism being that the range can be a little excessive which results in the car unlocking if you accidently push the button indoors.

I got a cheap ebay kit about 8 years ago and it's done it's job without any problems since, probably the best 25 quid I've spent on my car.

I am also interested in this. My car has had all elements of the central locking removed, including solenoids etc due to some previous muppet not getting it fixed instead.

I would like to put keyless central locking back in as my locks are a little bit dodgy.

Is this something a novice could attempt or best left to an auto electrician?

Easy to connect up the locking module to the OE locking system. All the required wires are behind the glove box area, and I've posted up where and what they are several times on here.
In your case I would find and refit a complete OE system as it left the factory first, rather than using the aftermarket actuators that righclick sell.
