I bought a new Ford Ka in May 1999 because
a) My 19 year old g'friend wanted to learn to drive
b) I fancied 45 mpg.
It was Ԛ£4995 with a year's insurance, no power steering, no fuck all.
Well the Ka did 49'000 miles in 2 years, sold it to a Ford dealer for Ԛ£2700. No repairs, and all the servicing was oil/filter every 6000 miles, whacked a new set of plugs in every 10'000 plus just onhe set of brake pads. My 320dSE Touring, 2000W plate needed an aircon rad, rear wheelbearings, front wishbones, headlamp glasses, air mass meter, radio aerial..........all in 30'000 miles.
So much for the Ford=crap and BMW=Good argument eh??
That's it. The Ka never, ever went wrong or broke down. It would wind up to an indicated 110 on the downhill bit of the M1 and would cruise with 90 plus on the clock, slowing to 80 on hills. It did 45 mpg no matter how you drove it.
As a car to own and use as transport they're fine.
Now for BMW E30's. In many ways they're a bit rubbish really, mainly because they're mostly old mega mileage shitters. They rust badly to the extent where you're hard pushed to find an F plater with no rust. I've seen G plate cars which are so rotten as to be a write off. Go and find a rotten F plate Peugeot 405 worth about ten quid - you won't. The heads crack, seats are shagged and the wet road handling is not clever. M40's are all a bag of nails. A quality, well made and durable car they are not - well not by the standards of bigger BMW's they aren't. Compared to a Sierra they're okay.
Go to any big scrapyard now and they're full of E30's - and later F and G plate ones. Another 2-3 years and there will be very few left.
So - a shagged out old 316i on an F plate or a Ford Ka? I'll take the Ford and know that I'll get where I'm going without the AA.
