Call me Nieve but bear in mind ive only been buying petrol for 3 years having only just turned 20...

my dad has a 1985 635csi and i was talking to him today and he said he has to put a leaded fuel additive in his petrol, that got me a bit worried should i be doing this with mine, ive never used leaded petrol, i thought that was something from the 50's lol?

Thanks

No there is no need for either you or your dad to use leaded petrol as both of your cars have hardened valve seats.

would a NEW BMW M20B25 engine have any problems running on unleaded petrol?

None whatsoever! Ordinary unleaded 95 is more than it requires.
Even engines that don't have hardened valve seats tend to be OK on unleaded as long as the seats aren't re cut. I ran BMC 'A' series engines on unleaded for many years with no ill effects.

cheeky bugger, leaded from the 50's. im only 21 and it was on the pumps till about 200ish (i think)

iv heard it can help (more so older engines) as it gives them a lining but dunno if its an old wives tale.

German manufacturers have used hardened valve seats in virtually everything since the 60s!
cheers,
