Planning on doing this myself, you can fill it in the spray bottles (bought a 2 pack from poundland) and a couple of light coats should do it. Can't be arsed to take the whole carpet out so will spray it while still in the car.
Seen a couple that eko has done using this technique and carpet dye and they have always come up really nice.

A twenty year old carpet will be filthy! You're just dyeing dirt.
Really needs to come out and be jet washed first.

Did my carpet with black carpet dye a while back for my 325 sport, i took the carpet out washed it well using a jet wash let it dry then used a 5 litre tin of black dye from ebay about 20 quid, i used an ordinary spray bottle and did about 2-3 coats and noticed it turning purpleish once dry so i did another coat this time agitating it in with a big paint brush, seemed to work better however... I found that trying to rinse the loose dye off after id let my last coat dry took most the dye off so it was back to square one in a way, so i did the process again then threw it back in the car without rinsing and its stayed a good black colour now for3 months and ive not had problems with my shoes getting stained just make sure each coat gets agitated in in my opinion
