After having a fellow look at my pride and joy (Mtech 2 1989 325i sport) today -he's pointed out a bubble rust spot next to the sunroof and a rust spot on the scuttle on the passenger side. The roof rust seems like it will be fiddley because of the need to remove the sunroof first? The scuttle also looks like a more involvd job?

Any guesses as to how much I should look to pay to get these rust spots sorted?

Roof is very expensive to do. You need a whole new roof that is brazed on. Scuttle is minor compared to the roof.

The scuttle is fairly easy work for a decent bodyshop. I recently had the scuttle done on mine along with the towing eye and repairs to minor blistering at the bottom of the doors. Assuming its not too far gone the old metal can be cut out and new metal welded in and sprayed. Make sure they use plenty of wax behind to make it good for another 20 years. New scuttles are available from BMW for about £50 - your dealer will need to see the V5 and will order one direct from Germany with the chassis number stamped on it. However, if its just one corner, a bodyshop will probably just repair your current one.

As Blitz says the roof can be more involved and big $ to do properly. At least a 325i Sport is a car worth doing properly - it'll always have a value.

maybe just me but id be looking to reshell it if the roof has rot. I weighed in a sport last year for the same reason. but then I did have 3 sports sitting.. so weighing one in wasnt a major issue to me

a new roof skin isn't as scary a repair as some would say, its actually braized on not welded

A sport imo if its not totally gone everywhere else they rust is worth repairing
