Welcome to the E30zone photography competition with the winners getting fame, recognition as a true artist  and prizes

The monthly catagories are as follows:

May - E30 arty shot
June - E30 in motion
July - E30 in the shot but not the main subject - nudie shots can be sent but may not be acceptable...but by all means try to convince me!.....nee blokes!!
August - E30 versus another car

Rules are limited not to stifle the creative juices.....

ONE PHOTO PER ZONER PER CATAGORY- again i say ONE PER ZONER!!

1. Must be your own photo

2. Must include in the photo an E30 or part of an E30

3. No heavily doctored photos - i.e. obvious photo shop

4. Send your photo to me as a PM (mrLEE30), DO NOT POST PHOTOS on this thread, any posted photos will be disqualified.

5. We will keep the entries open until end of May or until we receive 20-30. I will post the names of acceptable entries, so if you're on the list you're in the compeititon. No name then entry not acceptable - try again Loser!
This will mainly depend on quantity and quality of entries..if there are none then I will win with the excellent photo below!

6. The main focus of the judging is the photo and subject, not the quality of the photography or equipment

7. We will short list to four photos then vote by open poll for each monthly winner.

8. At the end of August the four winners will be voted on and a prize given to the winner..currently trying to blag a digital camera from local "sponsors" and maybe some other prizes too!!

9 Please do not just send a photo of your car parked in a grassy field taken from the front left corner  its just not arty and cars dont belong in fields!!....get creative...

NOT ART!.....

Fi, if i receive any good looking bloke photos i will send them to you....the comment is to stop people taking photos of their girlfriend/wife/neighbors wife bending over the coveted blue propellor in the hope i will choose this.

Gooner....tongue in cheek my friend.....this is why I say above the picture my photo is NOT ART!! Its also why i claim if no one sends in any decent pics this is the winning photo (as per rule 5)

what i want to avoid is people just sending a photo, such as mine above, of a stationary car simply parked in a field/car park/fuel station etc....this is NOT ART and unlikely to get my all important nod of approval.

Cook's sig pic take on the tachometer can be considered an arty type of shot....but cannot be submitted as per rule 4 winkeye

Right then here we go...... 8)

So then this rule #3 "no obvious photoshop"
How strict are you on this rule? As my idea of obvious P.Shop is one that is badly executed. However a shot that has obviously used levels (saturation, colour, contrast, etc) to improve or even make the shot but executed properly is an artform in itself- would this then be disqualified?
Every single one of my images goes through p.shop, even if it's to crop and tweak levels...

Is this a competition purely on photographic skills or a competition on artistic merit?

I'd say things like HDR etc are out of the question, but basic things like cropping and cloning out the odd aerial etc is allowed.

Photoshop is the work of lucifer himself, I think you should be judged on what the shutter caught rather than how skilled you are at PS (only because I have no clue how to use it) :)

Photoshop = Ban :)

What if you shoot in raw then and you you use photoshop to open it up? I agree with you to a point but after shooting in raw yesterday and a little bit of tweeking in photoshop... i have to disagree with you abit.

So P.Shop skills are not recognised as an artform?
Only asking as I've had this arguement with other photographers (usually older stuck in their ways type) and I'm rather defensive towards P.Shop's use in modern photography as a further expression of my image. Yes I can put my hands up to using it to even up lighting/levels but I also use it to enhance and create more artistic stuff that cannot be produced in-camera. I'm not on about Dali-esque montages and weird fake stuff but even simple things like slightly muting backgrounds and bringing dominant colours forward to enhance is obvious P.Shopping and would by definition be disqualified?
I don't wish to open a can of worms here and if no P.Shopping is the rule then that's the rule and it becomes an old-skool photo comp based on photographic skils...???
Just wish to clarify that's all :D

Cook's avatar is a prime example. Wicked shot in it's finished state but I bet the original is dull as!!
Does that make it unacceptable?? :D

the original isnt actually too bad tbh. I only make the background slightly darker to make the dials stand out abit more - the full sized uncropped version actually looks pretty good except from the dust over the econometer bit :o:

*cough* yeah i knew that... i was testing you :squint:

But yeah, the car looked awful originally mainly becuase the car hadnt been polished. The finished version looks brilliant and has had comments on here and elsewhere about how good it looks now (albeit several versions later!)

VV

would that level of p/s be deemed unacceptable? its only a lighting effect, some selective colouring adjustment and text over the number plate

Wicked final cut 8)

VERY PS'd but a very artistic view of an otherwise standard generic shot.
This is what I'm on about with my arguement, PS used to create/enhance a shot into an image- something artistic that cannot be created in-camera.

Again apologies to OP for the can of worms arguement winkeye

+1 to all that, try and find a non photoshopped image in the press these days is nigh on impossible...

PS FTW!

Let's face it, it's a photo shop competition.Photoshop is great and does enhance one's photos in an "arty" way, but I am sure it says "photography" competition. Everyone is going to use it to some degree, The borders of over use will be open to arguement I guess.

prizes too!!
Several other forums run competitions like this. Difference is they have one thread for posting their pic and another for discussions. They then have a public vote and the winner gets to choose the next months subject.

Given you want to run it your way or the highway, I wouldn't expect too many entries...

cheers for all the suggestions so in some sort of reply/clarification

I do not say no photoshop, i said : no heavily doctored photos - i.e no obvously photoshop.

by this i do not want a photoshop competition where a rusty chrome turd is altered to a bright orange car lowered 5 inches with chrome 19 inch rims. hope this clarifies the issue.

Rich, not sure if you are having a dig at me, so assume you are not, it is not my way or the highway and yes your suggestion is very good, i wanted to avoid loads of people posting pictures on this thread, hence why I suggest to PM them. given your idea i will now post acceptable photos in a locked thread once i receive them- by accpetable i mean sticking to the general rules.

I will be very accpetable of ALL photos except those not in the sprit of the competition....and please this is the first time i have done this so any suggestions are happily received.

So now lets get these photos in!

Lee.

Good work with the other thread. Good idea too on the anonymous part. Worth remembering that there's nothing that says it has to be YOUR car. So even if people recognise the car it might not be the owners pic. :D

Thanks Rich - all from your suggestion!

Also i have tried to keep the rules as open as possible, i only really say it should be your picture (but i have no way of proving this unless the zoners regocnise the shot from elsewhere) and that an E30 is in the picture..the rest is up to your interpritation!

E30 on the move for example...its hard to take a moving shot of your own car without special equipment!!
