the m40 had hydraulic tappets and are notoriously a tappety engine because the system simply put doesnt work properly as the engine wears so the camshafts wear unevenly and on an m10 they are adjustable .

but what would you rather have ... an m40 with a twincam head on it
or an m10 with a twin cam head on it ...

the m10 block design is still winning races today so clearly a good engine isnt it
So, what has an M12 got to do with anything? It used an M10 block - so what? Do you know how many hours was spent on said M10 block? I shall give you three guesses!
As for your spurious bhp/torque figures........wrong, quite wrong I'm afraid.
318i M10 105 bhp, 107 lb.ft and 29 mpg
318i M40 115 bhp, 119 lb.ft and 33 mpg
So, the old engine was better. Right........
Nobody has said the M10 is crap. But to say it was a better engine than the M40 is pure dreamland! As new engines in new cars, the M40 was much, much better.
There's also nothing wrong with the M40 cam and tappet arrangement. The only reason they wear out is due to poor maintenance leading to a blocked spraybar. They're the same tappets and rockers as used in the M70 V12 fyi.
Oh, and the S14 was replaced in the E36 race cars by the S42, a competition version of the M42. Uses an M40 block if memory serves...........

My current M40 316i isn't tappety at all at 150,000 miles. Many are neglected, I think.
I think all of this depends on your definition of "better". As I said, I've had all three (M10 316, M10 318i, M40 316i, and two M42s to boot).
As an everyday runaround with good mpg, quiet running, and decent torque, the M40 316i is great. I reckon the M40 318i would be better still, but I haven't tried one of those yet... It certainly seems these engines can do a lot of miles without major problems too, more than the M10 in my limited experience.
The M10 was an amazing engine in its day, and the fact that there are still so many around is a testament to it's longevity and appeal. In its favour it has a chain instead of a belt, and great things can be achieved with a bit of work on the carb ones. I wouldn't have one again as an everyday car though, not when there are so many good M40 engined E30s around. The M42 is the real no-brainer though - similar mpg, better performance, no cambelt, great noise. That's the 4 cyl E30 for me.
