It would be nice to have a table of what exhaust fits what car - seems confusing just now 2 piece, 3 piece, 320 - 325 , cabbie, touring saloon :?

Apart from the fact that twin tail pipes won't fit through a rear valence that has a cut out for a single pipe, cab/saloon/touring exhausts are all interchangable.

That depends how handy you are with a welder.
The point I was making is that the body type is relevant to this discussion. Floor pans are the same.

so M20 exhausts are intechangeable - providing you renew from the manifold back, i.e if you buy a full 2 piece or 3 piece they will fit regardless of b20, b25 cabbie, saloon touring?

Wish it were that easy...
The manifold/downpipe connection can vary on the M20's.
3 or 4 bolts and a slightly different spacing as well.
The simple solution is a hottuning manifold and a GSF centre and rear!
The expensive option is a BTB3 and BMW supplied centre and rear,or your choice from the various aftermarket stainless systems.
There are two issues with the stock cast manifold.
1.The fitting to the downpipe varies, and seems to be random, possibly a supplier issue at manufacture?
2.The thing tends to go 'banana' shaped over time, this causes head studs to be pulled out, usually the 'difficult' one's at the rear of the head.
Second issue was addressed by BMW with E34,they fitted a two piece manifold.
Youth is wasted on the young.
