Cheapest way is to fit a 325i engine :teehee:

Chip is worth while, and a shorter diff like 4.27 dont expect miracles though

put an m20 lightened flywheel on it.

makes what's available happen a bit quicker.chip it also, see speedtouch on here [chips sale in the for sales] a bbtb is £125 i think rix313 does them now?not sure what the price is from him though.

larey cams help but not cheap.

It will give you a bit more peak power but also move the power band further up the rev range.

Stripping the car out makes the biggest difference :p

I've got vauxhall vectra injectors in mine, and they made a slight, but noticeable difference. Easily worth the £35 they cost on ebay...

I've got the injectors, a chip, a mostly straight through and a ram pipe for the intake. I'd love to cam it though...

The TB's I get are just polished and ported basically they aren't enlarged.

I would definitely recommend a lighter fly wheel and a chip. You’re best off making what’s available, even more available and doesn’t cost the earth. Also as always, a good solid service will do wonders.

There is a cam mod you can do by moving the inlet cam 5degress but I’m not sure in which direction or what positive effect it has if any?

All engines require similar principles to make them go faster.

Simple stuff:

Intake - Induction or new filter (makes the breathing easier), Throttle Body (allow more air into your engine)

Engine - Lightened Fly, Camshaft (cant think of any other engine mods, bar things like port and polishing the cylinder head, boring out the chambers and stroking (the displacement)). If the engine is running very cleanly, then you'll get a bit more power. So service as well? Oils, belts, if you can refurb your cylinder head, do that etc.

EFI - ECU chip (using a chip like speedtouch's, or a rolling road remap, or for mad tuned cars, use something like megasquirt), AFM can sometimes be upgraded (is this more important when charging... i'm not sure), spark plugs and leads, ultrasonic clean/new injectors etc.

Exhaust - The iS has a very good standard exhaust I'm told.

Every engine responds differently though. You could do all the standard stuff and only get a few bhp more. Whereas you might find another similar powered car will feel the benefit much more.

Money is best spent keeping it running sweet. Also, handling upgrades are great in these cars. E36 rack is a cheap, but really effective mod. Good suspension. Brakes and braided lines. All new bushes. An LSD. and so on.

Power? Your best off with a good 325i motor, then all the stuff mentioned above! Or an M50/M52 engine... But, +1 to a lightened fly, and quickshift. The fly will be a PITA to fit, but quickshift is cheap and piss to fit.

also i thnk i read on the 318is there are 3 was it ? different chips as standard and its random what one you have ? what would the speedtouch chip mentioned do and any links to where to buy ?

also how many bushes are there and how much to replace them all with the labour would you say ?

cheers

i done the wrong one by accident, its got a lot more poke around 2000rpm - 3500rpm but suppfers top end a bit

wont matter anymore as the engine is pissing out oil because of sheered rocker threads in the head. Needs a new head Aka M20b25 Emptied 5 litres of oil in 24 hours 8O

Not for proper gains anyway.
