Hello everyone, im studying Body repair at Suffolk New College. I started the course in september. We didnt really get to do much in the first month or so as we had to cover health and safety. In early october we got to crack on with some workshop activities. I got to start a week before everyone else because of my knowledge of cars winkeye winkeye . I was given a steely to refurb first of all, and to be honest i was fairly gutted. A week went by 4lads were given alloys. As luck would have it one of the boys were bitchin about the work, and after a quick chat i swapped my steely for the alloy :D :D . When i got it, it was covered in black spraypaint and was full of dings. I thought id share my work on here to see what everyone thinks.

Image

Unfortunatly i dont have a picture of it when i got it but here's the alloy after a few weeks of work. I still had a way to go but i eventually got there.

Here it is after masking

I then etch primed it, then i highbuild primered it. I think i dne qiuet well considering it was my first time with using a spraygun.

Ill update this when i get the colour on, let me know what you think. Thanks for reading, Noah

When I was at college they let us sandblast alloys with glass bead in a cardboard box, we were rubbing our eyes for weeks afterwards

That rubbing down malarky is over rated!

Unfortunatly we gotta do some stupid panels for the college so i had to leave it at that. If i didnt have to do them i would of liked to do the whole wheel.

Yeah rubbing down is a pain in the arse, it took me ages to get in the nocks and crannys. I pretty rubbed all the skin off my fingers aswell   I think it was worth it though

Anyone in the know will tell you, if you don't rub the skin away, the wheels not ready for paint!

Wheels are a hideous pain in the arse to rub down.

Flourescent green.

I hate sanding wheels with a passion too. I've decided to give up and have anything from now on blasted. I'm happy to paint them myself!

When my dad did shotblasting, he charged about £8 a wheel. Spending £32 to avoid a day of rubbing down is good value in my opinion.

As for colour, I think a course silver would make you look like a spraying god, but I'd go for a nice bright orange.

How about spray the spokes black and the rim white? or other colours?

You get to show off your masking skills again then!

Personally I'd have stuck with the steelie and polished the crap outta it :)

Are you limited to what tools you can use? I find a air belt sander works wonders.

With got everything you could ever dream of. The college was built last year and this is its first year of use, so its clean as a whistle.

I went down the belt sander road on the flat sides of my spokes, and i went down just that tad to far. It was to harsh for the metal and left some big ol scratches in it. So i had to rub them out by head

My e30 is dolphin grey, but these aint for my car. I was thinking either something illuminous or a dark grey metallic.

If the purpose is for educational reasons surely it would be best to go for silver (vw/audi - is the brightest I think) as this would be the colour for majority of the wheels you would do? Base coat and clear coat?

Too sensible? :o:

Waaaaay too sensible!

Imagine you had a single wheel, isn't going to be fitted to anything and can be as unique as you'd like. You'd pick silver? Seriously?!

Do you reckon you could get a marble effect with paints? If not, gloss black outer, flourescent pink rear and sides of the spokes. :D

I was thinking of something along them lines. Not to sure on the marble, as its my first year we can only use sloid and metallic paints. The marbles and candys will have to wait til next year :( :(

OOOF, love that wheel above! To do that you'd have to do the centre of the spokes on your alloy polished, and the edge/lip, but the rest red. Solid red would look just too much.

I'd go with the above layout, but paint the spokes and lip black, the the rest hot pink :D

Finally got the colour on, had to go for a gloss black cause my tutor said its a good colour to show any imperfections. Unfortunately i werent allowed to do a illuminous rim on it :( :( but they do look good none the less :D :D
