I have been on about changing my e30 2 dr 316i lux for something with better boot space for sometime now, and something thats possibly better on fuel as I seem to spend alot of my money on fuel (electrical apprentice). I was going to go for an e36 compact tds, but my dad has swayed me off that idea. I cant get a van due to insurance purposes, and I need something more practical for work.
So when I was chatting with my dad he suggested an E30 touring, I have always liked them, I read an old TBMW mag earlier about the E30 touring and just thought that'll fit the bill.
Just wanted to see what people get out of their tourings, and which engine/box you have.

I swapped the engine in my 320 Touring for a 325 engine, performance improved but MPG was the same (ie piss poor), no point in having a 320i.
Beemer 325i Track car currently in production.
Audi S4 currently transporting me around.

I put a 2.7 in place of the original 2.0 in my touring. The fuel consumption increased by an average 0.5mpg. (before and after figures were both averaged-out over 16k miles/1 year) The only thing about the car that changed was the engine. I already had the 3.64 diff in with the 2.0. My driving style hasn't changed either.
I do 80-100 miles a week commuting, the rest of the 16k/year is long runs.
2.7 with 3.64 diff and 2.0 gearbox - 21.2mpg average on LPG. Equiv. petrol figure would be approx. 26.5mpg. Compared to your average modern car, it's crap!

If you want something better on fuel than a 316i Saloon, a larger engined Touring is not the answer !
Can't you buy a cheap Diesel estate for work and put the E30 on a classic insurance policy ?

My touring averaged 25mpg as a 2.0, now as a 2.8 its getting 24.8 but has more than double the bhp (the 2.0 was a bit down on power) and is much more fun
The LPG was only activated yesterday and im still tweaking so no gas MPG figures but im expecting around 22 (equivalant to 44+ on petrol depending how cheap you get the gas (47.9 here))
As a sidenote, I've just been doing some jobs on the neighbours 54 plate 525D and the trip computer on there says that over the last 5K it's averaged 94.1 mpg

What's replacing the focus rhubarb, using the reddies to buy a slippy diff or a 2.7 stroker

Thanks for all the comments, going to see at the end of the year whats what an how much my wages increase, then decide whether or not I change the 316i for a touring or as suggested a cheap diesel.
Also depends on how much work my boss gets in, if its loads then i'll change it, if not then i'll just keep her.
I'll get sum pics of her up too

I don't know the figures for the 316i saloon, but the 318i touring gives better mpg figures than the 316i touring
