It has a galvanised shell,so should outlast other models if stone chips, etc. are attended to promptly. 8)

What's so funny??
The only part of an IS thats galvanised is the metal in glovebox :chuckle:

Simple answer to the question is...

If you live in Ireland, an iS makes sence.

If you live in the UK or have a UK address, then just get a Sport and build a M20b28 for it...

If you can afford to run whatever E30 you want, get a 316i and build a S50b32 monster from the ground up :)

The weight difference and 4 pot balance is way overated...
If you can notice it in the real world and actually be upset over it, you really need to be thinking why you bought an E30 in the first place and not a proper track car that you need to wear a helmet driving.

4 cylinder E30s are slightly better for drifting as direction changes are alittle easier but driving properly the difference is very marginal.

Ive owned both a 325i and now have a 318is. Although I enjoyed the 325i it never put a smile on my face like the 'is' does.

Sure it doesnt have the grunt or pull of the 6 pot, but its just so light you can throw it around all over the place.

Horses for courses really, but given the choice all over again, Id take the 'is' without question.

On the subject of rare there were only 25 imported to start with and I think we had 15 left the last time someone counted. Most of the owners know each other too :)

Ahh... suppose that's fair enough then :o:

New Zealand and Austrailia kinda got the raw deal on E30 selection anyway with most being more-door chromies and a few imported 325i-Sports and Alpinas which sell for silly money.

Nope, only 25 were imported into New Zealand and there are only thought to be 15 left up and running.

Its quite a tight knit community down here and as I said most of the 318is owners know each other.

I dont think it quite stretches to the extent it does in the UK. Those who own them love them for what they are rather than constantly trying to compare them a 325i.

As I said before, my personal experience has me in an 'is' but of course their rarity in NZ gives them just a little bit more alure than a 325i.

[e] what I prefer to do in this debate is listen to those who have driven both rather than those who simply spout the same old rehashed debate....we have plenty of people down here who do that too ;)

Well i've had an iS for about 3 months now and i've enjoyed every drive!
being perfectly honest if i couldve afforded it i prob would've bought a 325 sport but after buying an iS i wouldnt go back! its not as quick off the mark as other cars but you have to remember most are nearing 20 years old..and untill i start throwing money into the engine bay i wont be completely satisfied with the speed..

i FULLY recommend buying one mate just dont get dragged into the 325 v 318is arguement as they are pointless!!..both are completely different animals!

good luck finding a good one :thumb:

There was a period on the zone where iS owners were getting a bit elitist and stating that the iS was just as fast as a 325i, handled better and was galvanised so it didn't rust etc etc. Most of the iS bashing nowadays is in revenge :)

Or so says the owner of the true champ - 325i Touring :)

Well the fact is, an iS can be as fast as a 325i if time has taken it's toll on each engine... which will make no difference to the M42 :D

If your living in Irleand, an iS is much much more sensible than a 325i-Sport.
If your bring in either car from the UK and NCT'ing and taxing it for a year, there's a 2000 euro saving straight away!

That's about the cost of most 318iSes to start with

And if you want to modify your E30, that 2000 spent on an 318iS will make a 325iSport pretty humble in terms of handling and speed even if they still sound abit better :p
