I could be wrong, but AFAIK all UK spec. 320i tourings came de-catted as standard. Production ended April '91 and cats weren't necessary until '92.
The front silencer looks like a cat, though.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

They're probably making an assumption on BMW's description "cat prepared".

Are you wanting to make your car more noisey?
BMW silencers are known for being efficient from a flow point of view. If you want to lose the silencer in a search for power, you're wasting your time.

OK, if you look under the bonnet or under the car, can you see a lambda sensor anywhere in the front pipes?
No sensor, no catalyst.

Failing that, go to your local BMW dealer, tell them the last 7 characters of the VIN code (chassis number) and ask them for a "vehicle specification enquiry" print-out. That will tell you exactly how the car came from the factory.
Mine says
200 * Delete Catalysor
200 is the factory option code.

Providing your 320I doesn't have to have one by law, then you can just put a middle box instead of a CAT, My '91 Touring has a CAT, but its not an MOT requirement

Does that mean my 318IS has 3 silencers then?

Yes, they aren't very good silencers then, car sounds the nuts with a standard system :)
