But of course!

All this time the entire motorsport industry has got it all wrong! All this time they've needed heavier engines to sort out the handling!

It is far more complicated than simply engine weights.. It just so happens, it appears the E30 likes a bit of weight in the nose over the wheels that do the steering.. It's not like a VW or Audi with the lump hung between the headlights

An M42 is that little bit too light for an E30 I think as well as not having the power to shift the weight balance towards the rear coming out of the corners hence feels abit skippy and snappy when pushed hard especially on undulating roads... could be the fact it's been a while since I had decent rubber on the iS too as it makes or breaks them so I might be happy again with it next week.

An S14 is about 15kg heavier, still has the short engine as well as the power to creat weight shift in the car...
Which is also why an M52 is probably the engine that should have been in E30s for E36 development... almost the same weight as an S14 yet abit more useable.

I'm a 318iS nut and very fond of them but a 325i-Sport is quicker but to me the pros don't outweigh the cons.
I'd much prefer a 318iS than a 325i however.
So in terms of how BMW offered it's models the 318iS was the best car out of the lot for value for money so the 325i-Sport was born to make a proper flagship model for BMW GB.

I don't understand why people care so much, an engine is an engine, it makes the car go forward - if it's doing that then it's doing its job.

How "fast" a car is is much more about how much of a nutcase the person behind the wheel is.

Hi guys.......and girls
Had a couple of IS'ssss and love them but would not brag too much about how well they pull between X mph and X mph as they are really not very fast. I currently drive an A3 quattro remapped to around 210bhp which would take the piss out of a 318 is without breaking a sweat ....and a 325i....so don't get too hung up on how fast your E30 is......it isn't. They are just great fun,,,,,,much more so than my 4 wheel drive AUDI which will kick your arse EVERY time......................
Much love

Non-delusional IS owner here.

It gives good MPG and it loves to rev.

But I wish I had a 6 pot.

End of.

I have a jet-engined trolley, with 30000000BHP which would trash your AUDI without even breaking sweat.

Put same nutcase behind the wheel of an iS and a 325i.. The 325i will be faster.. So your point was what exactly?

Granted. Still no point arguing about what engine is better - its personal preference, and I'm sure if budget was no object we'd all have S50B32s in our cars (though, I'd still have a S42, just to be different).

The S14 is out this argument.

As are M50's etc etc.

But if we have to go there, because you all keep going on about engines that have no place in this debate, could we not argue that the S42, a serious piece of Mototsport kit, is easily ahead of the S14 and quite possible S50-series engines?

Thus making the M42/S42 duo the most all-conquering set=up of all time ever!

I've been following this thread now for 10 pages and haven't yet found any reason to post anything at all...

Surely the entire point of E30 ownership is to be happy with and proud of the car you drive? Have I missed the point somewhere? Didn't realise I had to have "6 pot" tattoo'd on my face when I bought mine, and was obliged to stop and verbally abuse any 4 pot owner each time I saw one in the street!?!

I could quote plenty iS owners on this thread who've admitted to wanting to own a 325 and plenty 6 pot owners who appreciate the merits of the iS. Didn't we all buy an E30 for the driving and ownership experience (whatever that experience may be)?

Forgive me for getting a little bored but if you'd all excuse me I'm off out to drive the fookin nuts off my car since that's what I bought it for...and I'd still be doing the same whether it was developing 1 horse power per cylinder or 6,000,000!

Just a good nick M42 is worth more than an entire 325i. It's time these helm-twirlers swallowed the truth!

does it matter either way to be honest they are both a bit wet when i comes to power/speed neither are quick, same as most non m-power bmw (even my 328 is not quick by modern standards) if you want a quick e30 you have to spend serious money under the bonnet or change the lump. arguing with such hostility about which one is a bit less wet than the other is a bit sad isn’t it? and if you only want a fun drive out of your car then you can have as much fun behind the wheel of a iS as you can a 325i (but you will get a better sound track from the 6) who cares about 20kg weight difference, light conrods, both engines are old tech and neither are quick.

Hardly a tangent...I'm just choosing not to agree entirely with your point of view (partly because I've never driven an iS so cannot possibly comment) and simply appreciate the arguments put forward so vehemently.

That's right because it's absolutely, totally and utterly not possible at all in any way shape or form to simply appreciate the pros and cons of each car...

Toyotas 16v's from the same period are superior, hondas 16v's from the same period are superior and arguably the vw 16v's are also superior!. There is nothing special about the m42 engine imo. A good motor none-the less but nothing to rave about ffs!!
