I've been to to the Museum and the Welt and I live In California (america)! It was awesome! I used American Airlines to fly to Frankfurt (my dad works for American Airlines so I flew business class free :D ) and then I flew luftonsa (not sure on spelling) from Frankfurt to Munich. I suggest the same thing for you, fly into Frankfurt, then take luftonsa to Munich. Very few airlines fly straight to munich. Luftonsa is a small airline and very cheap.

I stayed at a Brothel on Bayerstraße street. All the major streets and cities are linked together through a subway system. I took the subway from my brothel to the museum in about a 10 minute ride.

Good luck with your trip!

I went there in 2005 (before it was refurbed) and just stayed at a hostel in Munich (about 12 euro a night from memory - memory is blurred from German beer!!)
You can catch a train to the museum (and Olympic Village nearby) for next to nothing. Well worth the trip - the village is worth a look too if you that way inclined.
Heaps to do and see in Munich too - some great beer houses and the like
