I've a 4.27 lsd, fitted it at the same time as a zone chip and the car was transformed. Motorway is fine I work 40 miles away and doesn't bother me. I get about 30-35mpg with it. I'd just go for 4.27 though I think it would verge on annoying with a 4.45. 3.91 could be nice with a chip and not necessarily slower as you'd get 60 in 2nd gear.
My 316i-m42 is running a 4.27 diff i haven’t tried any others but I wouldn’t want any higher gearing than that as the acceleration is a bit poor even with this diff.
