it's not that cold in winter with the top down so long as you keep the windows up ,
passengers sitting in the back will disagree

Because there's something wrong with it. Could be as simple as the controls not working properly, or perhaps the coolant system has air in it. Did you bleed it properly last time you did a coolant change?
Gonna have to give us some more clues, I'm afraid!
Oh, & heated seats FTW.

because the temperature control knob is at the 12 o'clock position instead of 4 o'clock? e30 heaters are normally spot-on. are all the vents open or just the ones you want the most heat from?
btw: congrats on your first topless drive. feels good. doesn't it?

Only had car a month, so not bled water. Have tried controls in all positions.
Temp gauge barely moves! Takes so long to get even a small amount of heat. Was useless the other week with all that ice and snow, esp on small trips!!

when Ziggy says bled, its like the radiators in you house.
They get air bubbles in them which can cause malfunctions. Less hot water less heat.
On the top of the rad there is a large'ish plastic screw, when the engine is warm put heaters on max and open the srcew slightly so you hear air phishing out, when the water comes out close the screw.
Thats the system bleed

Got the roof down yesterday - albeit on the drive - cabby is still off the road (until April), but like to make sure the electric roof is still fully operational

Could be a failed thermostat

Thermostat must be a suspect if it takes longer than it should to warm up.
scootlife wrote:How often should this be needed to be done ?
Only when you mess with the system (changing parts or coolant) unless there's a leak of some sort in there.
