Moderator: martauto
I'm sure its to do with the weight balance on the cabby i took the one out my wife's old cabby drove it about 5 mile and went back and put it in as it wasn't the same car to drive with it removed it didn't fill me with confidence

It alters the resonant frquency of the car in order to remove vibrations caused through driving.
So only the cabby have the weight. I took it out and went for a drive, it does make the rear bounce and shake a bit more than usual. For people that are curious about what I am on about.. pics below:
I reckon it is at least 20-25 kg.

My very late M635's bootlid weighs a bloody ton. Very late standard bootlids don't and earlier M635 bootlids don't. I reckon they must have weighted it to acheive the famed 50/50 weight distribution.
Either that or a previous owner left a few kilos of something in there - ought to check really.

i have read somewhere that the e36 or poss the e46 cabs have a different battery which doubles up to do the same trick, guy couldnt understand why his car shimmered (his words not mine) since a battery change, turned out he bought a halfords special instead of a special bmw cabriolet battery.

Guessing to compensate for the loss of weight due to battery fitted under bonnet helping to push the driven wheels to the ground. Probs nothing to do with vibration. Audi and merc used to stick weights all over the the arse end of their cars in the late 80s and 90s. Seemed to be the "german" thing to do.
