What will you be using the car for?
For a straight 6 you want a minimum of 2.5L (speaking as a 2.0 driver) then you have to decide weather you want the newer 24V lump or not, the older 12v M20 can be run above 400bhp on standard internals with a turbo

well i had 2 m20 325i and they were greatl, i already have a turbo impreza so to be honest would like something with the power there all the time or perhaps supercharge it later on, i would like a later 24v engine but i dont know which one to use i.e should i use a 2.5 or should i go the whole hog and get an m3 lump??
I dont really have a budget as all work will be done by myself being a mechainc but i dont have the money to go wild, i would say i could budget a 24v conversion with obvious uprated brakes being involved.
What is needed for the 24v conversion? And what is complexity

Cheapest power/£££££ option would be to slot in a M20B25 tbh
The M50/M52 option is going to be more expensive. and the M3 option you mention will cost upwards of £5K IIRC for all the necessary parts and fitting if basing it on an E36 evo/non evo lump
Have a look at the M50/M52 sticky for details and on E3024V when it's back up and running(it's curently down coz there switching servers IIRC)

in all honesty i do know and like more about the m20 b25 lump than the 24v lump, so what would be better/value wise turbo or supercharger, i know a supercharger would cost more as there is more of a setup but what sort of engine management would i need to run the turbo on it and what sort of size turbo should i run, i dont want something to laggy but dont want something thats gonna run out of puff early in the rev range.

M50s are pretty strong when it comes to turboing too. I'd go for an M50B25 with a big Holset turbo stuck on it all day long.
Not in E30s any more
