have to say my e30 is the cheapest car to insure i think ive had yet, and the quickest, had reached the ripe old age of 21 when i got her. (on the farm poilcy, so not exactly sure as to what each car costs on it, but it went down a bit when she was swapped for my old merc)

cost me £216, she has had in the past 40k miles: water pump, fornt wheel bearing, subframe bushes and a coup of ball joints. i would say that is quite a cheap car to run, ignoreing fuel and tyres, obviously.

if you can get insurance go for it, and hope for the best.
