hi folks,

RARE CAR!

Image

i posted a few days ago about my 318iS baur. this car was a trade in. while the previous keeper was coming to trade it in with us, it started overheating..it hasnt been cooked, it starts and drives fine...but it does need a head gasket.

many more details and lots of pics at the link below. this is a mock up advert, that will go on ebay once edited in more detail.

www.buchananmotors.com/ebay/318iS/318iS.htm

im wondering if it is worth repairing the car or replacing the engine,or selling as it is.

can you guys help me value it in..

a..it's present condition..needing head gasket and MOT.

b.. running, with a replacement engine and 12 month MOT.

thanks folks..!

anyone want to buy? email me at mark@buchananmotors.co.uk with any offers..(sorry, i know this is wrong forum for sales)

I have no idea what this car is worth but i wouldn't go booking your Hawian holiday just yet.
With 200k miles and as you describe 'it has been cooked' i would say a replacement engine would have to be factored into any purchase price.
These have alloy heads and there is a good chance the head may be buggered if not the rest of the engine.
Baur's arn't the most popular of e30's but this being the iS variant will obviously help with the novelty/rarity factor.

thanks guys,,

i said it hasn't been cooked!..it drives fine!..

if i were to replace the engine, is it worth £1800+ ?

if were to sell as it is?? £1000? less?

novelty value must be worth something...

it is far to good to waste/break!

That'll teach me not to read so fast then
The problem with Baur's is the price of proper rag tops is so low these days that the less desirable 'cabrio' version has followed suit.

Location could be an issue too.

if that was 300 miles closer, I know a guy in Watford that would snap this up

yes..the car is in glasgow..

ideally, it would need trailered away.

im trying to decide what to do with it..ie, weighing up what it's costing so far, against the cost of repair and it's potential value.

i have sold a few in the past and im quite an enthusiast....

i sold a lovely 1991 318i cabrio in neon blue with 78k on ebay last october for £3495.
i sold a lovely 318iS in red done 111k last august on ebay for £2425
i sold a nice 318iS in red done 160k last novenber on ebay for £1700
i sold a not bad 316i coupe in charcoal done 110k in january for £650

ive had many more, ive lost count..!

i now the baur is not as popular as the 2dr coupe. they are better drivers than a cab. but the rarity has to stand for something.

a new engine from bmw is about £2500 ish iirc

i personally would pay around 600-800 pound for it as is but no more, it may be worth you fixing the head gasket.

the pics look good but its rusty in places as are all e30's.

with a replaced engine you may get £2000 but im not to sure.

your right that its an 'is' so will help increase value but if the engine needs work it will decrease the value.

yeh, the bumper needs painting. there is an engine available on the forum for £150. i can get it fitted for £350. so job done for £500 + the mot.. so call it £600..and it would be back in the room. i would spend a few quid on the paint to tidy it up...rear bumper, a good machine buffing etc.

Lovely car, I didn't even know they did a cabby 318is. I would say it was worth repairing, but as to the value of the car its only worth what someone will pay for it, but not sure if its worth more with a decent engine in with a car which has done that many miles... Looking at the pics though, its hard to believe that mileage.. in a good way ofcourse!

I await to see the ebay ad and I will probably wak a bid or two into it also winkeye

Hello Sharkfactor

I have a white iS baur and they are indeed now quite rare. Mine's only done 80,400 miles.
The following info has come from e30 zoner called Baurtje and he knows tons of stuff. and has a website but it's in Dutch! Nice pictures though.
"In 1990, there were 916 tc baur made. 121 of these were exported 318iS, in total there were 29 318iS RHD built - 27 of which in 1990(both LHD and RHD)" . I hope I've quote him correctly. I think that makes yours and mine quite rare as I said. If you contact him with the chassis number he can tell you what number yours was in the production - adds to the interest!

Save it, and good luck with the sale.

St.Reitz 8O

Maybe I should explain something: mr. Reitz is a Baur collector from Germany. Already has had 4 325iX Baur, 2 318iS Baur and a RHD 323i Baur, a 318i Baur TC4 (yes, E36) and some more BMW.

FYI i recentley tried selling my tidy 325 baur and couldn't even get a grand for it, as people have said prices are sooo low atm (not just for BMW E30 cabbys, but EVERYTHING) there are other trinkets catching peoples eyes.

However as with any decent E30 i think they cant loose to much more, and things may swing the other way eventually. Luckily im not in the position of having to sell mine, i wanted to but i can keep it and not give it away. I guess you dont have this luxury being i the trade
