was doing some work on pete27577's car earlier to try and cure his running problems, had to change the inlet manifold gaskets so when the mani was off i checked the gaskets and only to find that the gasket for no 1 cylinder was double gasketed!!!! no wonder there was an air leak!! and not only that but most of the nuts that hold the mani on were only hand tight!!!!! :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

theres some right dodgy mechanics out there so watch out and hopefully fitters like this can be avoided!!

Thats nothing, a mate a few years back took his 325 to the mechanics as the head gasket was effed so what they did was they took the old gasket off and didnt bother to sand block the engines down where the head meets, the just cleaned it lightely leaving bits of old head gasket debris and shoved a cheap new one on and blted it down hard over torqued cracking one of the headbold gallery and car drove "ok" and after about like a week it was missing water mixing anything possible, i took it apart and nearly fainted, the head was cracked as i checked the torque sttings on reverse opening was tight like airgun tight, new head needed and checked the bottom block and the gasket was totally warped... and the dodgy mechanic who done it caused damages and charged me mate £450 and as he dropped the car of in the morning my 12pm he had the car back so it was a rushed job, cut the longstory short, next day he got his money back with a few mates took all his tool case and tuning machine and good hiding, the guy never opened that garage agin from what i understood.

:D :D :D

get what comes to ya... thank F--K im a mechanic for bmw by trade i do my own work, but dont touch cars apart from mine and thats if u have to!!!!

I use locking nuts on my inlet manifold, the swines are so tricky to get to to ensure that they are properly tight.Still no excuse for the gasket and electrical thing, though.

re: Mainfold Nuts.

Any idea what the Torque setting is? I bet its probably something light like 30-40nm. So they arent meant to be wanked up super tight!

i know theres some seriously dodgy garages about, the "mechanic" that owned my last car is one of then, that thing should never have had an mot. most of the dodgyness iv encountered comes from bristol or burmingham way tho.

The 'mechanic' who rebuilt an engine shortly before I bought it used nice new nyloc nuts on the inlet manifold. Pity he didn't bother to fit one at all to the one hidden behind behind the water elbow!
He also decided that the water pump would be adequately fixed with one bolt short as well!

I place 14 nuts in a row,and keep hunting until all are used.14?12 for the inlet and two for the thermostat housing...
