Re: EWS Issues - four years on!

Quick update: The eBay guy got the ECU back to me after two working days.. Very fast turn around! Plugged it in and it fitted first time. It was definitely an EWS failure. The new map that he's put on there is actually really good. I was very sceptical, but after driving it for a while now I can say...

Re: EWS Issues - four years on!

My first thought was battery as this is exactly what happened last year. I replaced it with a massive Bosch silver top.

Its charged fully and jump starting it made no difference, with either a mates golf or a booster pack...

Re: EWS Issues - four years on!

It was probably the cold.. Eeprom memory is often balnked when you put it in the freezer. I'm not sure how the transponders work, but whats the betting leaving them in the cold car for extended periods of time blanks them? I doubt BMW designed them to seeing as you take your keys indoors every night...

EWS Issues - four years on!

Guys, I have been running my S50 for three to four years now without a single issue. Wednesday I was returning from a friends house and went to start my car. It fired up first time as per usual then died away almost immediately. I cant hear a click from the EWS unit which has been working perfectly ...

I went through a spate of getting pulled over when I fitted the s50 (can't think why). when they realise I'm a 30 year old petrol head and not a rude chavvy boy racer they are normally pretty decent. 13 years of driving and the only speeding points are an sp30 in a crappy diesel fiesta company car! ...

Re: Short documentary of an e30 owner

That actually made me stop and think. I've treated my S50 E30 a bit like a hack recently and it's beginning to show. It looks more than a little deshevelled and there's a hint of VANOS growl that will need some costly TLC, but I've been putting it all off and getting annoyed because it isn't perfect...

I made a rear beam that is adjustable. Screwed up my measurements whilst welding and now have only 0.75 degrees of camber. Tyre wear and straight line grip is excellent but it handles like a slag in the wet! You are looking for 1.5 degrees whilst at resting height on a level surface if I recall corr...

Any questions mate, drop me a PM. I will try and answer. My engine was a near mint unit. I replaced the VANOS seals and it since hasn't bee quite right. I now have a slight growl on over-run that needs to get fixed ASAP. I have a feeling that I may have put the solenoids back in at a very slightly d...

An upgraded external and swirl pot is the best bet. The swirl pot will more or less garauntee you wont have fuel starvation during cornering or on a low tank. Bear in mind though: I used an M3 (M-Coupé to be precise) pump cut off an E36/7 cage and fitted to an E30 one. I then bought a sock filter v...

I think I recall it being a matter of matching the sender to the guage in the clocks Dan. I think my fuel guage is all confused because I kept the sender from my 318 instead of the 325. Nobjockey.

Worst comes to the worst you can swap the guage from a 325i or something...

I really like them.

I have one but painted it textured black instead of the body coloured ones that were std fit. Makes my common or garden base model 325i look a little better, but in a failry subtle way (the S50 with straight through Supersprint race exhaust however, doesn't)..

Go for it!

Re: Diff bush - Powerflex pollybush or Z3?

Not only are the polyflex ones hard and transmit noise, they ruin the handling. The Std BMW bushes are edsigned to deform, and have a hysteresis loss angle to aid suspension. The Poly ones don't. The rear beam in E30's is a live suspension component and shouldn't be over-constrained or have the wron...

It works best with copious ammounts of WD40 as it fills any gaps.. The shock releases the taper and the WD40 hydraulically prevents it deforming into any voids... That sounded technical didn't it? I would expect it to go for strong money though, as somewhat of a modern classic with a modern engine.

I like the standard diameter tech 1! The size only makes it more retro. A 370mm one might be nice to try, especially covered in suede or alacatara, but they dirty up very quickly. An excuse to wear sparco race gloves to the shops?

I'd personally put a new set of standard shells in and fit ARP bolts; especially if you are entertaining the idea of 8K rpm... The load on the rod bearing is proportional to the square of the engine rotational speed so that extra few hundred RPM has a big impact on your bottom end (oooer...).
