Finally, the crappy chinese-made Magneti Marelli thermostat was replaced with an OEM Wahler and the temperature needle is dead center again.

Just a quick update on the issue

Finally, I managed to find a Motometer Si Board in good condition. I changed the batteries, swapped it with the old one (VDO) and voila: my econometer came back to life

The part that you need is an Idle Control Valve (ICV). Go to https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select?product=P&archive=1 and type your VIN (7 last digits) on the "serial number" box in order to find the correct part number for your car.
