Re: The evolution of ‘Errol’ the 325i Cabriolet
Thank you :) it’s taking a while but will be so worth it!! I sprayed it (just a light coat) with VHT high temp enamel paint. Do you remember which brand and colour of paint you used? It makes the engine bay look phenomenal! I’d like to think it’s not just the paint 🤣 but the brand is VHT, in Alumin...

Re: 3.91 vs 3.64 diff
Thanks for all the help guys. Does anyone know if I have to use 325i driveshafts to match a 325i medium case diff? Or can I use the same driveshafts that are currently on my 318 cab? I haven't done a swap like this or anything but I remember reading somewhere that you can use the same driveshafts a...

Re: 3.91 vs 3.64 diff
The small case diffs work (with the appropriate half shafts) but it's more the longevity when dealing with the torque. If you're just cruising around then it's probably fine as long as you drive smoothly - but IMO I'd stick with the 3.64. I haven't driven an M20 for a while, but I recall that geari...

Re: 3.91 vs 3.64 diff
The small case diff has 6 mount points for the rear cover whilst the medium has 8 - so its easy to check. For me a 3.91 would be too short with an M20 B25 - but opinions will differ... depends if you like high revs at cruising speeds. Paul :-) Ahhhh it has 6 mounting points! So’ it’s a small case t...

Re: 3.91 vs 3.64 diff
I had a 3.73 LSD in my Cabby - and whilst it would pull like the wind, I found 1st almost useless - you run out of revs at such a low speed - and I also found that cruising was a bit painful - revving a bit high at cruising speeds. Last year I fitted a 3.46 open... and it feels a whole lot better -...

3.91 vs 3.64 diff
I’m swapping a low compression 1989 m20b25 in to my 1991 318i convertible, I just wanted to know if the 3.91 open diff from a 1995 320i would work well with my car? (I have been offered the diff for a reasonable price) OR shall i hold out for a more suitable ratio? I have heard that the 3.64 is also...

M40b18 -> M20b25 AFM help
I managed to buy a M20b25 engine and trans to swap into my 318i cab. I’m wondering if i can keep the black airfilter box/housing and just change AFM to the 325i one?
(I posted this in the technical help section but figured here would be more appropriate).
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.

*wanted* M20b25 engine + ancillaries (facelift)
Hi all,
I’m in need of an later model m20b25 (325i) engine + all the ancillaries. Please let me know if any of you are selling. I’m planning to swap it into my 318 Cab over the next few months.
Also interested in a matching manual trans, propshaft and diff too.
Thanks

Hi Recently acquired a 88’ 320i auto which just failed NCT/MOT for small amount of play in steering rack. Car is tracking well with no pull left or right and not vibrating at motorway speed. Re: E30 Project: Replacement for M40 engine...?
I am currently doing the same thing, putting a m42 e36 in an 318i e30. all is out, engine gaskets, waterpump, thermostat clutch etc replaced. My m42 engine came from an automatic, but it will fit the getrag 240. the engine block is the same. Is your getrag 240 from an m40 or m42? I’m guessing you’r...

Re: E30 Project: Replacement for M40 engine...?
If you're looking to fit to a budget and don't mind M40 performance, M42 seems like a stellar option in my eyes. If you wanted to build a stroker and get more power and sound nice down the line, M20 sure...but doesn't seem worth the box/driveshaft/exhaust etc. change. I am not familiar with how swa...

Re: E30 Project: Replacement for M40 engine...?
Cheapest option will be the M42 as your can use a lot of the M40 parts to fit it. I’m not too familiar with the diff ratio on a cabrio but the running gear can remain the same where as you’d need a gearbox and a diff for an M20b25 swap. Something to consider though is the 318iS and the 325i both ca...

E30 Project: Replacement for M40 engine...?
So I have had my first E30 cabrio for 3 months now and i’m loving it, the only issue has been the engine... While I actually don’t mind the M40’s limited performance, it’s leaking oil and I suspect camshaft damage as the revs won’t go over 5k RPM? The engine has 190k+ miles on it, so I think it’s ti...

Re: Cabriolet flex reduction
My cabby had a brace fitted when I bought it...a solid one too...but I binned it as it made zero difference to the ride or handling that I could feel. I might try out an x brace... not the garagistic one but there's a couple of cheaper European made x braces which at least you can test without blow...

Re: Cabriolet flex reduction
My strut brace on its own did very little to reduce scuttle shake. The X brace however... that's made an entire world of difference. Car is night and day compared to what it was. What do you mean by X brace? Thanks Ben The X brace is the one that goes underneath the car and ties the engine sub fram...

Re: Something’s draining my battery...
I had a similar issue and checked the resistance on all the fuses with the battery connected. One in particular, I think it was some sort of interior or boot lighting iirc, was constantly draining power so I just pulled that fuse. Bit of bodge but it made my battery last for weeks at a time whilst ...
