I have an e34 m50 and Getrag direct top gearbox together with an M3 diff.
Could someone please advise which gear linkage, gearbox cross member, and propshaft I'll need.
Many thanks

I changed the top mount but it made no difference. Substituting the stut for another cured the problem so the Billie will go for rebuilding.

Re: Realistic time for m52 swap?
Stick it in fifth, put a 22mm socket on the crank pulley bolt and turn the engine over one complete turn. If the gearbox output shaft turns more than one turn, then it's an overdrive box. Thanks for your reply and I agree that's the obvious way but there's no gear linkage attached to make a selecti...

Dan, how do you recognise this? I've bought an M50 motor and 'box - apparently from an E34, and the gearbox is different to the one in my E34 525i.DanThe wrote:Ive got an overdrive E34 M50 gearbox ive been meaning to put up for sale

Gutless M50 - lack of torque
Hi I'm surprised how gutless my non-vamos M50 and I'm surprised that it's gutless until 4300rpm when the motor wakes up and goes well after that until the red line. Is this a characteristic? The idle speed on mine can be fast until the engine warms up then the idle is inconsistant - sometimes idling...

Remotec/Borbet A wheels
Hi I've bought a set of Remotec/Borbet As to replace the OEM alloys on my E34. I plan later to convert my E30 to five stud and fit these wheels. The tyre fitter struggled to refit the wheels and snapped a wheel bolt saying that the bolts didn't fit properly so didn't appear to tighten - so he kept t...

I asked Quaife about this for my Z3 diff and they recomended any good quality gear oil to the manufacturer's spec- don't use clutch or plate type LSD oil.

The E34 I bought for an M50 conversion is in better condition than I first thought - it's got a Bilstein suspension kit fitted which lowers it about 30mm that the seller didn't mention - and I may keep it and look for another one for the conversion. There is a problem in that when the offside front ...

What's the difference between red and green label ECUs?
I need a 405 ECU for my non vamos M50 conversion and have been told that some have a red label and others a green one.
Is there a difference, and will I need to buy one or the other? If so, how can I find out which I need? (I bought just the engine)
cheers

Re: Available seats
I've fitted a pair of Alfa Romeo Recaros from a 156 Veloce. It needed two 50mm wide flat bars drilled to fit the seat frame and the car floor. It is a tight fit side-to-side as the E30 interior is small compared with new cars. The new seats are electric so that needed wiring too. They are superb sea...

Re: 5 stud conversion using E36 parts
Basically, the m3 evo stuff, provides more castor to help re-centre the wheel. If you want to use standard e36 stuff, you can. All you will need is some custom made wishbones, which are available from e30 centre darlaston, which push the wheel back into the centre without having to use the m3 hubs ...

If you want the easiest route, wouldn't it be simpler to use your 316 gearbox? Presumably the existing mount, linkage, and prop could all be used? Either way you'd need to change the diff.

Re: Wheel offset?
Remember mates, offset is relative to wheel width so be careful when blanket stating that E30s like one certain ET... they can range a lot. Offset (ET dimension) is the distance from mounting face to centre line of the wheel and is not related to the width of the wheel. The backspace dimension (inn...

Is the Z3 diff a straight swap, or do you put the Z3 internals into an e30 case? Straight swap. Z3 uses an 30 type rear beam. Good to know. Does this mean the CWP are interchangeable between Z3 and e30, as if it does then it looks like a Z3 diff would be a good choice as it should be in better cond...

I've bought a non vanos M50 motor from a zoner complete with a type 413 ECU. Later on I found out that the non vanos ECU is 405 and the 413 is for a single vanos motor.
Do I need to buy another ECU or can I just buy a 405 upgraded chip from here to fit my current 413 ECU?

Also, it's not absolutley essential to incorporate and electromagnetic clutch into this system but it does help make it more efficient (the Lancia didn't have one so far as I am aware, so the roots pump was kept spinning all the time, even when fully bypassed). The s4 was certainly a wonderous bit ...

Hi
If I cut off the downpipe flanges and weld on new downpipes with slipover joints on the new exhaust, will there be sufficient clearance with the steering column joint or will I still need to cut and shorten the pipes at the manifold flange so it all sits closer to the block?
cheers

Brand new viscous fan coupling - What am I doing wrong
Before taking this back to GSF I thought I'd see if I am doing something wrong. With the old coupling, the temp gauge climbed when my car was idling and stationary. Testing the fan with paper shows it doesn't work well when cold or hot. Fitted a new one from GSF and there's considerably more resista...

I'm interested in one to if the price is right and it suits an E36 rack. Here's a machine company selling stock splined bar - up to 12' long so should be ok for a group buy.
