are we talking cross purposes? haven't started on the AFM yet as trying to figure out if the idle control valve is broken... my fault for putting the ICV in the topic title & not body of text.

Still useful if I need to look at this next.

idle control valve (air, stabilising whatever...)

Resistance values all OK but unplug it with engine running and nothing happens - idle stays the same (about 900). Surely this means it's knackered? Am trying to solve a 'put my foot down on cold engine and car splutters and hunts and thinks about stalling' problem. Thanks for any help and anyone got...

Re:

Not much good now you've got it off but had the same problem (hex bolt shot) and used an angle grinder to cut a slot for a flat head. Very quick and don't have to resort to breaking it with a hammer. Only good if the old discs are being thrown away...

once you've got the pan off, make sure to give it a good clean (+ mesh and two magnets that pick up the filings) Think you can actually replace the mesh as it's considered a filter. Can't see why this would be necessary, as previous post said : gasket and O-ring that's about it - oil to use is a dex...

buckled alloy?

Vibration (not steering specific) coming in after about 75mph, gets considerably worse up and over 90mph.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Also does anyone know for sure the steel ones are an exact match? Could be some difference in the geometry, size etc. Sure it'd only be minor but there must be some reason for different parts. Only other guess is that it is bmw's overall attempt with the touring to compensate for the inherent chassi...

got the same problem - only due to a perished gaiter - a curse bmw for making the wishbone a single part (I only need to replace a balljoint...) So same dilemma of steel & alloy (for a tourer)- can't afford one and don't want the weight penalty of the other. Would go the scrappy route but don't want...

any particular cylinder?

and considering I didn't take it off (really... i would remember... i can't have been that drunk...)

must have been sitting on the sump tray for some time. Presumably some sort of timing information that my car's been missing.

So how come I haven't noticed it?
