Re:

Ok. got back to working on the car today.
Discovered the problem goes away when I disconnect the vac line from the distributor.
Did the suck test on the dizzy and it seems to hold a vacuum ok.

Car drives ok with the line disconnected but I can hear faint pinging under load so need to get it sorted.

Re: Hesitation/Misfire - logical troubleshooting strategy...

The Bentley does have some good troubleshooting guides in the 'Driveability' section iirc. After that I would be just going through Fuel, Air, Spark; as you have been. Since it's more noticeable above 3k, I'd probably be starting with fuel, by checking pressure at the rail and maybe changing the fil...

For the sake of completness, I'll update on this until I can hopefully solve it. I got the multimeter out and checked the ECU connector as per the bentley. Firstly, my car has less pins than are referenced in the Bentley and the wiring diagram. I seem to have no WOT reading from the throttle switch,...

Re: M10 318i - Misfire only at 0-20% throttle opening

AFM looked pretty good inside, only slight line in the track, not badly worn. Despite stuff written online, I dont think you can test this with a standard multimeter. I adjusted the track position anyway to see, but made no difference so moved it back. The problem has been getting much worse in the ...

Re: M10 318i - Misfire only at 0-20% throttle opening

If it is the same as the M42 the three pin connector goes to a variable resistor not a switch. The middle pin is the wiper and the outer 2 pins connect to the ends of the resistive track. The ECU reads the resistance and can tell where the butterfly is between fully shut and WOT. Actually it is the...

Re: M10 318i - Misfire only at 0-20% throttle opening

Update: I've found my car is different than what is described for L-jet models in the Bentley manual; Looking for 5V at the throttle switch harness connector with ignition on, I get nothing. But with the engine running, there is a difference with the switch disconnected... So I checked voltage at th...

DHFiS wrote:Worn track in the AFM?
Thanks.

I haven't opened the AFM but I suspect a worn track would create symptoms also at other throttle openings.

The throttle switch is not getting any voltage (should be 5v).
I will try to resolve that before questioning the AFM.

Re: M10 318i - Misfire only at 0-20% throttle opening

Update: I'm not getting any voltage at the connector to the throttle switch. The throttle switch itself is working fine; continuity at closed and WOT positions. I cleared the coolant passage on the throttle body which was completly blocked. Next step is to check the L-jet unit. And check for continu...

1984 seats - Long suffering girlfriend needs more support

My girlfriend is recovering from a back injury and finds the passenger seat in the E30 to be too low slung and unsupportive. It's the bottom part of the seat that's the main issue. I've put a fair bit of work into this little '84 M10 recently. Engine is running sweet, new shocks and springs are in a...

Thanks for exlaining that. Makes perfect sense. The sum of 9 method seems overly elaborate in comparison. Sorry for the typo, I meant to say 0.008". My Haynes manual "BMW 3&5 series" definitely lists 0.010" cold for 4 cyls and 0.012" for 6cyls. [img] [img]https://cdn1.imggmi.com/uploads/2018/4/8/6b0...

M10 valve clearance question

I adjusted my valve clearances today using the rule-of-9 method; With valve 8 at full lift, adjust valve 1, and so on. All 8 were tight. I set them all to 0.2mm. There's an awful lot more noise, but the car runs better. I'm still not sure if I've adjusted correctly though, The Haynes manual says; Se...

Re: Reverse lights stopped working - Checked switch, bulbs,

Switch works fine but not getting 12v to the connector. Got 12v up at the fuse, but not getting anything at the gr...

Re: Reverse lights stopped working - Checked switch, bulbs,

Pull the plug and socket at the base of the gear lever apart (under the gator). Turn the ignition on and connect a 12 volt bulb between the green/white wire and a good body earth to check if power is present. Connect 12 volts directly to the blue/white wire and see if the reverse lights light up. T...

Reverse lights stopped working - Checked switch, bulbs, fuse

I know the switch is the common culprit but mine seems to be switching ok (there is continuity when in reverse).

I tried shorting the 2 pins on the connector, nothing.

Both bulbs are ok.

I checked Fuse 10, it's ok.

What else do I need to check? :?

Is it definitely coming from the engine bay?
Could it be a worn or loose diff pinion? Or some other driveline noise?
Mine makes a bit of a whirring sound when it's not under load (on a neutral throttle)

E46 rack depowering - How to disassemble spool valve?

Hoping somebody can advise me here, the ZF manual doesn't go to this level of detail. I'm guessing I need to press out the small pin at the splined end, but am i missing something else? The 3 slots on the spool valve look as if there is a retaining ring that can be picked out. Cheers. https://i.imgu...
