That doesnt necissarily make it any good! TRhe best engines are the 4 pots, the s16....
Didn't mean to say that 4 cylinders aren't as good as 6's. Just that, having a 6 myself, i have a bit more power to compensate for the loss of power when driving an auto.

Piston slap? Yup, very nasty knocking sound coming from the engine especially when cold. It has something to do with the piston not fitting properly in the cylinder causing it to hit the sidewall. As the engine warms up the piston expands and the noise reduces or goes away. I doubt that the motroni...

My 323i was a 320i '88 about 27 months ago. So running on motronic. Used everything from the 320i.

Engine has a pistonslap, but it runs :)

I didn't really notice a difference in power, but lots more torque.

Shaky E30

Hi everyone. After replacing a broken rocker and refitting the head (mechanic did all this), my car is shaking at idle. As soon as the accelerator pedal is depressed - ever so slightly, just past the 'click' of the TPS - she runs fine. What the hell is wrong?! I've checked the ICV. Tested connection...

head refitment

Can the headbolts and cambelt be reused when refitting the head?

My mechanic assures me this would be fine, but I remember reading somewhere that these would need to be new.

I had the cambelt replaced not so long ago though.

Thanks in advance :)

I can confirm this. I recently changed my diff from 4:11 to 3.64 (for economy and because the old one sounded terrible). The difference in performance is very noticeable, especially on pull away and when using the kickdown function.

I kinda miss my old diff :(

Hi there.

Will a 325i AFM (from motronic car) go into a 320i (running motronic)?

And a 320i AFM into a 325i?

Cheers

325i conversion questions

Hi everyone. I'm thinking about changing to a 2.5 engine some time soonish. Just a couple of Q's: 1. Will a 2.5 engine from an old 5 series work? (If also an M20) 2. I currently have 320i AFM, TB, Intake Manifold and ECU(motronic) etc. Will these work or do they need swapping as well? 3. Anything el...

Hi again flaskatron. No the cruise control isn't standard. Easiest way to know if you've got it is to check for the stalk on the steering column, but if it isn't present make sure by looking at the throttle body: There should be three cables connected to it if you've got cruise control. One for the ...

I had just about the same problem a few weeks back on my auto. P + N rev at about 2k. D + R revs at about 1250. Ended up being the cruise control cable connected to the TB (Throttle Body). The plastic clip thingy broke and the cable kept tugging on the TB allowing too much air in. The car was almost...

Thanks Brian,

The colours dont quite match mine, but I'll undo the boot on the panel-side of the connector and see if those wires match up. Otherwise I'll just test for continuity between the different wires. That should tell me what wire goes where, assuming the switch isn't broken.

Well, ended up being the engine oil level sensor/switch. When I took the connector's rubber boot off two of the wires were not connected.

Brian do you know which wire goes where? The connector is numbered 1,2,3.

There's a yellow, a brown or red (was a bit dark down there), and a blue.

Oil Pressure Sensor Replacement

Well, after some probing with my trusty multimeter, I now know my oil pressure sensor is fooked.

Question 1: Can I replace this without draining the oil?

Q2: What size socket is needed to remove it? The largest I have is a 22mm and that didn't fit.

Cheers

Hi I think it's time to change all the coolant pipes in my engine bay. I have had 2 pipes crack near the connectors causing a leak, one time almost causing the engine to overheat. Every now and again I do push my car hard. But even when driving 'normally' the oil also seems to 'steam'.

Yeah I live in South Africa, so summer conditions can also be quite hot.

Has your car's engine been changed? If not I guess that an oil cooler wasn't standard on the 323i.

323i oil cooler?

Hi

Just a quicky: I swapped my 2.0l to 2.3l a while back. Now I'm wondering if the 2.3l should have an oil cooler? When I open the rocker cover cap, after driving the car, the oil gives off 'steam' - Is this normal?

Maybe it's just a clogged filter? Did you change that when you changed the ATF?

Otherwise it might be that something is clogged up in there. Maybe you could have a pressure test done. The Bently has some good info on how this is done.
