Re: I’m back… up to date advice needed please..

Welcome back, In reality not a lot has changed stuff learned 20 years ago still valid, Bit more of a 'stanced' scene in places, but the price that originality fetches makes needless modifying a bit less popular on good original cars. IMHO on a 325 all you need is Arms, brakes. bushes, belts etc etc...

I’m back… up to date advice needed please..

Hi all, after a short break of something like 15 years I’ve returned to E30 ownership and reactivated my zone login. Having spent huge amounts of time on the zone as we built the original community back in the early 2000’s I then dropped out and moved on to work, kids, lots of other cars… I’ve succu...

Sorry I have to disagree, the BMW engine has very fine tolerances and is perfectly suited to synthetic oils. There are too many benefits to ignore them. Cheers Simon I'm not arguing with you I'm simply offering my opinion. An M20 with 100k+ miles on the clock as most E30's have doesn't quite fit in...

The looms for the two cars are very different, how did you get round the crank sensors etc?

The BMW M20 engine was designed for use with a multi-grade 10w40 to 20w50 mineral oil, putting fully synthetic in an old engine is never a good idea.

I'd stick to a semi synthetic 10w40.

10W40 semi is the best all rounder for the M20, most of them had mineral in from new.

If you're getting a rattly startup i'd check your valve clearances.

It's a very well known fact, you can correct it with offset bushes.

Have you tried adjusting the CO on the AFM? Also check your Idle control valve is clean and working correctly, fueling for a certain idle and then not allowing in the correct air will cause a high CO. You must remember the Auto models idle slightly lower than the Manual version. Somebody has the exa...

2 main places for E30 leaks are around the tank inlet, that builds up with mud and crap, often more noticeable when you have a full tank or corner hard.

The other is the hoses that clamp onto the injector rail, they're under pressure and often perish and crack from the heat.

Yes the AFM has little function at idle on the M20, the screw to adjust it is for idle CO setting only. In a lean case i'd check for vacuum leaks, or a faulty ICV which may also go with a rough or uneven idle. Idle CO isn't too important to the car's over all running but it can vastly improve the wa...

That Mini vs F150 test is balls, the F150 deformed so greatly because it's over 2 tonne of weight, the mini is far less. If you crashed the F150 Head on into the mini then see who survives. The E30 is a tough car, but it's very rigid which means the entire shell takes a hard impact, modern cars are ...

Touring isn't that great on fuel extra weight and the lower ratio diff, probably get mid 20's out of it averaged.

I managed high 30's from my 325i SE on a long run, but you only have to floor it a few times and that goes to pot.

Ideally you need to find the cause of the cracking. Has the body work been filled or has fibre glass been used on that section in the past? Badly done filler often allows rust underneath which causes cracking, can happen in old paint to. If you don't have the time/money to investigate the cause of t...
